Analyzing Personnel Turnover in the Royal Navy: Environmental Influences and Psychological Contracts
This study investigates how the environment influences personnel turnover within the Royal Navy, focusing on the experiences of Operator Mechanics (OMs) on Type 42 ships. Using qualitative methods such as in-depth interviews and questionnaires, the research explores the impact of physical and social environments on retention. Key findings highlight feelings of isolation, dissatisfaction, and the breakdown of psychological contracts over time. The study concludes that increasing dissatisfaction related to living and working conditions, rather than culture shock, significantly contributes to turnover.
