Understanding Cartilage: Structure, Properties, and Growth Mechanisms
Cartilage is a specialized connective tissue characterized by its unique structure and properties. It consists of a matrix rich in proteoglycans like hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate, which provide compressive strength and elasticity. The matrix hosts chondrocytes within lacunae and is classified into three types: hyaline, fibrocartilage, and elastic cartilage. Each type has distinct locations and functions, from bearing weight in joints to providing flexibility in the ear. The avascular nature of cartilage limits its regenerative capacity, making understanding its growth mechanisms, including appositional and interstitial growth, crucial for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
