In October 2010 at the HTA Conference in Nottingham, Terie Duffy, National Cord Blood Coordinator at King’s College Hospital NHS Trust, shared the inspiring story of Sorrel Mason. Diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia, Sorrel’s life was saved through a cord blood stem cell transplant after a suitable match was found in Japan. The presentation highlighted the importance of ensuring quality in cord blood collection, including consent, maternal medical history checks, and infection screenings to support potential transplantation and research.
