  2. Vietnam War Looming Bomb Threat Desk Drills “We will begin a series of atomic bomb drills this afternoon. When the sirens blow, I expect everyone to follow our government’s drill procedures precisely.” -Pg. 208, 4th paragraph The looming threat of atomic bombs was there in the 60’s • “At the beginning of May, Mrs. Sidman told us during Morning Announcements that this would be ‘Atomic Bomb Awareness Month.’” • -Pg. 208, 1st paragraph • Atomic Bomb threat in 60’s

Baseball Batting Average Ed Kranepool Mets “… pay him twenty-four thousand dollars next season, just like Ed Kranepool.” -Pg. 129, 2nd paragraph Ed actually joined in 1962 • “He had a batting average of .245 this year.”…”Down from .288 last year” • -Pg. 79, 12th,14th paragraphs • This was the correct batting average for Mickey Mantle in 1967

People “Flower Children” Walter Cronkite “We listened to Walter Cronkite report on the new casualty figures from Vietnam,” -Pg. 7, 6th paragraph Walter Cronkite was an Evening News reporter and reported on location during the Vietnam War. • “I know I have a flower painted on my cheek” ”Why?” “Isn’t it obvious?” “Not unless you want us to believe you’re a flower child.” • -Pg. 35 16-19th paragraph • The flower children (hippies) were highly disrespected because everyone thought their opinions were trash and were around first in the 60’s.

Places Camillo Junior High Temple Beth-El “Half of my class went to Hebrew School at Temple Beth-El.” -Pg. 3, 4th paragraph There actually is a Temple Beth-El on Long Island, but it is probably not the same one. “Of all the kids in the seventh grade at Camillo Junior High…” -Pg. 1, 1st paragraph Camillo is a fictional middle school only used for the book. Most of the book takes place in the school.

Background Death of MLKJ Vietnam Husbands “Eleven days later, on Wednesday, Lieutenant Tybalt Baker came home.” -Pg. 263, 7th paragraph The teacher’s husbands were coming home (or dying) from the Vietnam War, which was happening during the 60’s. • “…Martin Luther King, Jr., … had been shot and killed.” • -Pg. 190, 1st paragraph • They actually got his death correct, and this shows the time period obviously with his date of death.
