  1. Historical time period By: Jordan Rosales

  2. Time Period The Salem Witch Trials took place in the spring of 1692. I found this out in my book on pg3 in paragraph two, when it says, “That is the way they refer to the witch madness of 1692.” The time of the exposition in my story, is after the witch trials. The time that my story takes place in is 1706. As it says on page one in the title.

  3. Past, Present, Or Future? The words used in this novel are good indicators of the time period. An example of this is when she says, on page two in paragraph three when she says,“ 'Twas my husband who bade me to do so.” More evidence that my story takes place further in the past is that, on pg.4 paragraph 6, it says, “I would have turned and run across the snow, back to my horse and cart, and dashed away.” rather than, “I would have hopped in my car and drove away.” Events mentioned on page six in paragraph two, like smallpox, and Indian raids, are all events of the past that we do not have to deal with anymore. This is more evidence of the events taking place in the past.

  4. ENVIROMENT On page six, in paragraph one, she says, ”And I was out here, alone and friendless, in the bleakness of the early December landscape.” This tells us that it is winter and gives us a better idea and picture of where she is. On page seven in paragraph two she says, “The woman probably never washes, I told myself. But that was unkindly. And if God was turning his countenance from Salem village as Reverend Parris often said at meeting, it was as likely because of my uncharitable heart as because of anyone else’s.” This tells us that the setting and time period had strict religious beliefs and rules, because not many people would think of that after saying something in this time period. The town in America also has slavery. This is stated on page nine when Susannah says, “I heard that Reverend Parris’s slave Tibuta tells them stories.’ Slavery in the U.S.A has not been around since 1865, when the thirteenth amendment was passed.

  5. ENVIROMENT The environment in Salem is also very controlling. This shows when Abigail Hobbs says, “and they’ll persecute you here in Salem for wearing such clothing. I hate this whole place. I hate the rules they make us live under. I do not care for fine clothing, but they won't even let us read books. All our elders are hypocrites” The society is also based on agriculture, and livestock raising. This is shown throughout the novel when people do and talk about farming related tasks. An example would be on page fifty eight in paragraph six, when Abigail says, “I’ve helped my father slaughter his hogs. I’ve sheared sheep, washed and bleached and dyed wool, hoed the garden, helped with the candle and soap making. What I do with my own time is my affair.”
