  4. Choice Assignments:1. Researched Letter • Chose one famous person who died young. • Conduct research on that person's life. • Imagine that you had a relationship of some sort with that person - roadie, personal assistant, nanny, bodyguard, etc.Adopting that persona, write a letter of condolence to that person's parents. • Your letter must be at least five paragraphs long. • The letter must contain evidence of the research you conducted. • After you sign your name at the end of the letter, present your bibliography of sites used to research that person's life.

  5. Choice 2. Narrative Poem Compose a narrative poem (poem that tells a story) that depicts the life of the person who passed away at a young age. The purpose of your poem should be to present the person's life. The poem must incorporate imagery and poetic devices. At the end of the poem, present your bibliography of sites used to research that person's life.

Coming up…Movie Study October Sky is based on the true story of Homer Hickam Jr., a high school student in rural West Virginia in 1957, who was destined to repeat his father's harsh life in the coal mines until he turned his attention to the skies. At odds with his father, determined to better himself, and inspired by the dawn of the space age, he embarks on a mission that changes his life forever. With the help of his friends, Homer wins first prize in a national science fair and learns he can do anything he sets his mind to. In his quest, Homer is also aided by a supportive teacher and inspired by Werner von Braun, whom he finally meets. Through his determination to reach his goal, he eventually gains the respect of the whole community and, finally, of his father.
