Some facts about Iceland • Iceland is an Island of 103.000 sq.km • Population around 320.000 • Icelandic is the mother-tongue (North/Germnanic origin) • Homogeneous culture and history since 874 AD • Immigrants were 2% in 1996, over 6% now • Job activity is very high, but unemployment around 9% since 2008

Some facts about Iceland-2 • GDP high although the crises in 2008 struck the country very hard • Vegetation 24% - Wasteland + glac. 76% • Sea area within fishing limits 758.000 sq.km • Annual fish catch ca. 1,5 million tonnes • Important sources of income: Production and selling of energy, fishing, industry, tourism • Reykjavík- Paris 2200 - New York 4200 km

  4. A fundamental principle of the Icelandic education system is that everyone should have equal opportunity to acquire an education, irrespective of sex, economic status, residential location, possible handicap, and cultural orsocial background.

Life Long Learning • Numer of those attending some kind of adult education has risen very fast in recent years. • Upper secondary schools offer regular courses in evening classes and in distance learning. • Universities offer a variety of learning opportunities which can be classified as adult education. • Life long learning centres run in cooperation of municipalities, social partners and schools are spread over Iceland. • The majority of employees have access to funds that pay for their education.

My occupation • Director in housing for individuals with mental disabilities (Welfare department of Reykjavik city) • Integration of individuals with mental disabilities into studies and labour market is a big concern for my field of work • Also a part time teacher at the University of Iceland (qualitive methods)

  7. My client´s • Been out of the school system for many years and want to start their education again. • Most of them have poor previous school background. • Part of my work is to help them adapt in their new education and work. • New strategies and ICT tools would therefore be very helpful for me in my working field.
