  1. Microbe of the Week • Neisseria gonorrhea • Causes the sexually transmitted disease (std) gonorrhea • Most commonly reported std in the US • Gram negative cocci occuring as diplococci in WBC of vaginal or penile discharge

  2. Neisseria Gonorrhea • Transmitted by almost any form of sexual contact, vaginal, anal and oral. • Incubation period for males 2-8 days • Male symptoms -urethral yellow creamy pus discharge, with burning sensation

Neisseria gonorrhea • Females-can disseminate most easily during menstruation and lead to involvements of joints (arthritis), heart (endocarditis) or pharynx • If female is infected during birth can lead to blindness in baby. Usually silver nitrate drops used at birth to prevent newborn infection.

  5. Neisseria gonorrhea • Diagnosis dependent on direct gram stain of sample and culture of organism • Direct gram stain look for gram negative diplococci inside PMN • Culture and stain

  6. Neisseria gonorrhea • Treatment with antibiotics very effective • Penicillin most common treatment. • Some resistant forms treated with spectinomycin.
