  1. Hawaii Ocean Time-series and the ALOHA Observatory Roger LukasUniversity of Hawaii ALOHA Observatory Review February 2006

  2. One of many significant results from HOT Surface layer forced by seasonal, interannual and decadal variations of atmosphere … Decadal salinity variation in upper pycnocline remotely forced … Main pycnocline exhibits 15-year long trend

  3. Last two years • Continued ~monthly cruises to Station ALOHA … 17+ years! • WHOTS mooring deployed August 2004(Weller/Lukas) • redeployed July 2005 • MOSEAN mooring deployed August 2004(Dickey/Karl) • Seaglider surveys (Emerson/Eriksen)

  4. UW/APL real-time cabled profiling mooring Next year or so • WHOTS mooring redeployment June 2006 • MOSEAN mooring redeployments • UH Seagliders (2) • ALOHA cabled observatory installation • Observatory management issues • physical layout, logistics • cyberinfrastructure • governance • Moored profiler to MARS for initial deployment

  5. ALOHA Observatory Management Issues http://kela.soest.hawaii.edu/ALOHA Sediment trap mooring?? 6 nm Drifting sediment traps?? UW/APL profiling mooring Ocean Reference Station(NOAA/NSF) MOSEAN(NOPP) ISSUES Mechanical interference, including deployments and recoveries Acoustic interference(releases, ADCPs, etc.) HAW-4connection

  6. Action Items • Current funding for HOT ends November 2008; new proposals required • Support for moving moored profiler to ALOHA needed • Observatory management support needed • Protocols, costs and timelines for experiment planning [e.g. benthic community videography (Smith and Drazen, UH)] need to be published
