Presidential Qualification #1 • Constitution says in Article 2, Section 1, “No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution…” • You must be a natural born citizen • What does “natural born” mean? • Do you think that we shouldn’t have any foreign born presidents? • Eight presidents were born British subjects, so why did they become president?

Presidential Qualification #2 • Constitution says in Article 2, Section 1, “…neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years…” • You must be at least 35 years old • Why did the Framers put this qualification in the Constitution? • Who was the youngest President? • Who was the oldest President?

  5. Presidential Qualification #3 • Constitution says in Article 2, Section 1, “…and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.” • You must live in the U.S. for 14 years • Why would the Framers put this qualification in the Constitution?

Presidential Term Limit • The Constitution sets the term at four years; it didn’t originally limit the number of terms to two • George Washington established the tradition of only serving two terms • 22nd Amendment (1951) limits the President to having a maximum of two 4-year terms or a maximum of 10 years

It’s a safeguard from a dictatorship It’s undemocratic because it places a limit on the right of the people to decide who should be President It undercuts the President’s authority during the last part of the 2nd term (because people know he won’t be President much longer, so they can criticize him more) Pros/Cons of a Four-Year Term Limit

Informal Qualifications • College • Andrew Johnson never went to school • Lawyer • 20/44 have been lawyers, including Obama • Military Experience • Only the following never had military experience: John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, John Quincy Adams, Martin Van Buren, Grover Cleveland, William Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Franklin Roosevelt, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama

  11. Informal Qualifications • Experience in Government • Only Zachary Taylor had not served in government prior to being president • Protestant • Only John F. Kennedy wasn’t Protestant • Married • Only James Buchanan wasn’t married • White • Only Barack Obama is black • Male • No females have ever been President or Vice-President

  12. Presidential Internet Activity • Your teacher will assign you a president • Using the internet and a word document, answer the following questions: • 1.) Name of president • 2.) Number of terms served; number of years served • 3.) How old was the person when elected? • 4.) Where did he go to college? • 5.) What wars did he fight in?

  13. Presidential Internet Activity • 6.) What positions in government did he have? • 7.) What type of religion was he? • 8.) What were his characteristics? (i.e. – was he smart?; was he outgoing?; was he a hard worker?) • 9.) Do you think this president was popular? Why or why not? • 10.) Would you vote for this president? Why or why not?
