  1. Quality Control • Definition – a set of laboratory procedures to ensure the test results are accurate and reliable as a diagnostic tool. • Includes: • Testing known samples • Charting results • Statistical analysis of results • To ensure reliable results, manufacturers procedures must be followed

  2. QC in the Med Micro Lab • Equipment control • Monitored daily or weekly to maintain appropriate temp. • Any temp. variance outside established range may affect lab results • Equipment includes: • Waterbaths • Autoclave • Refrigerators • Incubators

  3. QC in the Med Micro Lab • Media/Agar control • Can be made in-house, purchased or donated • Known stock cultures are used to check for growth and correct biochemical reactions

  4. QC in the Med Micro Lab • Reagent control • Should be tested using positive and negative controls • Quality of Gram stain reagents is checked with known bacterial cultures

  5. QC in the Med Micro Lab • Antimicrobial Disc Control • All antibiotic susceptibility discs should be checked against known bacterial cultures and the sensitivities compared with manufacturer’s results

  6. QC in the Med Micro Lab • Stock Culture Control • Cultures themselves must be tested periodically to ensure viability and performance

  7. QC in the Med Micro Lab • Specimen Collection and Control • Protocols must be followed for proper collection of client’s specimens • Improper collection can create inaccurate, unreliable results • Contamination • Cross-contamination • False negatives • False positives

  8. Bottom Line • Lab results are not acceptable if the quality control is not within established parameters
