  2. Before we even try to discuss concepts in Psychology, it is but proper to first fully understand the term. To do so, let us try to unravel the etymology of the word Psychology.

  3. Etymology of Psychology:2 Greek words • Psyche (mind/ soul) + Logos (science/ study of) • Etymological Definition = Study of the mind or soul

  4. Definition of Psychology Many psychologist felt uncomfortable with the definition of Psychology as the study of mind and soul due to the vagueness of such description. The mind or the soul is not observable and quantifiable.  In fact the idea of humans having souls could still be debatable as of the present.

  5. The idea of the soul is based more on faith brought by the belief of life after death, rather than practical and scientific reasons. Nobody can see what's going on in one's mind. Mental activities per se is not observable, but we can make inferences based on a person's behavior. Thus, it is better to say that Psychology is the study of human behavior.

  6. Different authors define Psychology in different ways but in 1990, Feldman defines Psychology as the scientific study of human behavior and mental processes.

  7. Further it can be said that Psychology  is  the  science  that  seeks  to  measure,  explain, predict, and   sometimes   change  the  • behaviorof  man  and  animals.
