Introduction • In this PowerPoint I am going to talk about Bungie, the products they make (Marathon, Myth, Halo), how they brand their products and some ways they have advertised.
About Bungie • Bungie is a video game company that created the billion dollar franchise Halo. The company is currently located in Bellevue, Washington, USA. The company was founded in May 1991 by a university student Alex Seropian who then brought in Jason Jones, they then created the Marathon and Myth series which were successful games. • In 2000 Microsoft bought Bungie. Their current game was then to be created for Microsoft's new console the Xbox. The game was then revealed as Halo: Combat Evolved which then became the Xbox’s biggest game franchise selling millions of copies. • On October 5, 2007 Bungie split with Microsoft to become a privately held independent company, Bungie LLC.
Products - Marathon • The Marathon Trilogy was developed in Bungies earlier years and was initially released for Macintosh in 1994. The game is a science fiction series of a first person shooter and is regarded as the spiritual predecessors of the Halo series. • There are three Marathon games in total the first released in 1994 and introduced new ideas for video games such as dual-wielding weapons and real-time voice chat for multiplayer. • The second game Marathon Durandal was released in 1995 and was ported to windows 95 the game and featured new modes called Forge and Anvil which were used by Bungie to create the game. • The final game Marathon Infinity was released on October 15, 1996 and included more levels then Marathon 1 and 2 these levels were also much larger, the game was only released for Macintosh. • In 2005 Bungie released the entire trilogy to the public as freeware which allowed the game to be freely downloaded.
Products - Myth • The Myth series is a real-time tactics game, originally released in 1997. There was only two games released by Bungie in the franchise but a third was created by Take 2 interactive. The game features revolutionary use of 3D environments with its weather effects and physics engine. • The first game was released in 1997 by Bungie and was called Myth: The Fallen Lords, the game focused more on squad and soldier level tactics the game was different from others of its type because it had a more sophisticated physics engine which allowed the player to interact with almost all the objects in the game including fallen units. • The second in the series was called Myth: Soulblighter and was released in 1998, it is not the final in the series but is the last to be made by Bungie. The game featured new units and strategic options.
Products - Halo • Halo is Bungie’s biggest and most successful game and has made a billion dollar franchise. • The franchise started with Halo: Combat Evolved which was released on November 15, 2001 and launched Microsoft's new console the Xbox and sold over 5 million copies. Halo is listed as the Xbox's killer app and a HD remake is set to release on November 15, 2011. 10 years after its initial release • Halo 2 was released on November 9, 2004 and sold more than 6.3 million copies in the United States alone. Halo 2 is the best-selling first-generation Xbox game and was the most played online game until the release of Gears of war for Xbox 360. • Halo 3: ODST was released on September 22, 2009 and sold 3 million copies worldwide. The game takes place during the events of Halo 2 and featured access to a Halo: Reach multiplayer beta which activated on May3, 2010. • Halo 3 is the third and final game in the trilogy and was released on September 26, 2007 the game sold over 8.1 million copies and was the best-selling video game of 2007 and featured new modes such as forge which allows the player to create maps. • Halo: Reach is Bungie’s final game in the franchise and was released on September 14, 2010 the game made over $200 million on its launch day in America alone. The game is not the final in the franchise with the future release of Halo 4 in 2012 but it is the final game made by Bungie.
Branding • Halo has many different ways of branding. • The character- Master Chief people recognise him because of his colours (green) and his armour by seeing The Master Chief people immediately think of the Halo franchise. • The colours- when people see the colours Halo uses (Blue for logo, Green for character) it makes them think of the Halo franchise. • When people think of Halo it usually makes them think of Microsoft and the Xbox/360 and Xbox live.
