  2. CPS population accounts for approx. 7% of total population in Franklin County (Pop:1.1 million)Columbus Public Schools • Total School Community - 69,561 • 61,116 Students • 8,445 Staff • 170 school buildings Goal: Total number for training • 800 – 1200 staff members • 5 – 8 person teams

  3. Medical Disaster Response Team (MDRT) – Team Composition • MDRT Leader – School Nurse • Back-up personnel will be assigned in the absence of the School Nurse • Sites without school nurses will have an alternate person named as team leader MDRT Team Members- • other staff- teachers, aides, custodial, who have been trained

  4. Medical Disaster Response Team (MDRT) • MDR Teams will operate as trained lay rescuers. They will not be giving care beyond basic first aid (as they are not professional rescuers) • First Responder First Aid Kits- 1 per bldg (170) • Medical Push Packs- tx 500; 4-6 total • cached at 3-4 sites

  5. Training • Include: • American Heart Association CPR / AED / First aid, and triage training in the START/JumpSTART algorithms • TRAINERS • American Heart Association Certified Instructors who are school nurses at Columbus Public Schools

  6. A Girl Scout moulaged for a live action triage drill for Columbus Public School Nurses. The scenario was a bomb blast.

  7. Nurses went through multiple stations to prepare them to lead the Medical Disaster Response Teams.

  8. Nurses practice field trauma assessment while an Air Force evaluator looks on.

  9. More patient trauma assessment.

  10. Medical Disaster Response Team Students get a mix of “hands on”, lecture, and video training.

  11. Nurses practice emergent victim movement.

Program Applicability: • Applicability to existing/ongoing activity: • CPS and CHD have been collaborating as health partners since the beginning of the CMMRS in 1997 • Collaboration has improved day to day health care in the areas of : • –    Approx. 100 registered nurses in CPS • –    School buildings as designated shelter areas • –    School buildings as designated mass vacc/proph sites • –    CPS participate in emergency response exercises
