  1. What is Classroom Management? • Broad Definition = “Organizing” the classroom in such a way to preventdiscipline problems and maximize student learning • Notice here that in the definition, the focus is on PREVENTION - what teachers can do to avoid problems and maximize learning. We will discuss in a later class ways to REMEDIATE problems that already exist.

  2. Classroom Management • How can this be accomplished? (Prevention?) • Using Appropriate Instructional Strategies • Deciding whether to group students based on ability or other special characteristic • We will see more specifics in a later video segment. • Seating Arrangements • Using Time Wisely • Being invested in your own job (e.g. “You have to like them.”

  4. Things to look for in the video: • What is the Relationship between RESPECT and having LOW BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS? • What is the relationship among 1) Rapport 2) Disclipline and 3) Learning? • What is a way(s) to make sure students don’t get bored or lost interest?

  7. Classroom Management • Factors for grouping: • Consider the “Good” and “Bad” aspects • Should be based on purpose of the lesson • Members of “lowest” group need special attention • Teachers need to be “managers” of groups • Consider time factors, explicitly stated rules, & the size of group
