Why are we driving to 55? • Tennessee Promise is the cornerstone program of Governor Haslam’sDrive to 55initiative. • The Drive to 55 aims to increase postsecondary attainment in Tennessee from 32 percent to 55 percent by the year 2025. • To reach 55 percent, Tennessee needs to produce an additional 494,000 degrees, of which technical certificates and two-year degrees are a key part.

  3. Tennessee Promise will provide the opportunity for high school graduates in Tennessee to attend a community or technical college free of tuition and mandatory fees. • The Tennessee Promise will provide a last-dollar scholarship. • Students will receive individual guidance from a mentor. • Students must attend community college, college of applied technology, or eligible program full-time. • Participants must complete 8 hours of community service each semester.

  4. Student Eligibility • To be eligible to receive Tennessee Promise, a student must: • Be a Tennessee resident. • Graduate from an eligible Tennessee high school, complete a Tennessee home school program, or, prior to reaching 19 years of age, obtain a GED or HiSET diploma. • Enroll in an eligible college or program and attend full-time the fall after graduation (students attending a TCAT may enroll the summer following their high school graduation.) • Complete the Tennessee Promise application at www.TNPromise.gov. • Meet all deadlines and requirements before enrolling.

  6. Tennessee Promise Process Fall 2014 Student applies Students apply to Tennessee Promise through TSAC Student Portal. By November 1 Student connected to partnering organization and mentor

  7. Tennessee Promise Process January/February 2015 Student files FAFSA TSAC tracks student FAFSA filing and supplies information to partnering organizations. By February 15 Student attends first partnering organization meeting Partnering organizations organize first meeting, then send list of student attendees to TSAC. By March 1

Tennessee Promise Process March/April/May 2015 Student attends second partnering organization meeting Partnering organizations organize second meeting, then send list of student attendees to TSAC. By May 31 Partnering organizations work with students to ensure that application has been submitted to eligible program. Student applies to an eligible institution

  9. Tennessee Promise Process Summer 2015 Student performs community service Partnering organizations verify community service hours and report to TSAC. By beginning of term Student enrolls Higher education institutions provide list of eligible student enrollment to TSAC. By beginning of term

  10. Tennessee Promise Process Fall 2015 Student begins classes TSAC sends scholarship funds directly to higher education institution. Partnering organization keeps in touch with students to renew scholarship.

  34. Meeting Layout • Meeting dates, times and locations are confirmed and posted at www.tnachieves.org. • Counselors are encouraged to attend. • High schools will meet together in many counties. • Private and home school students will be assigned a public high school team meeting. • Team meetings are best held in cafeterias. • Microphone is helpful if possible. • tnAchieves representative will arrive at least 45 minutes prior to meeting. • Each high school is assigned a regional coordinator that will meet with all applicants in November to distribute handbooks.

Meeting Attendance Policy • Students must attend their scheduled meeting as outlined in the student handbook/website. • Exceptions are as follows: • Participation in a school-sanctioned event (e.g. athletic event, choir concert) • Student must present tnAchieves with the game schedule and a signed note from the coach. • A scheduled practice is not considered an excusable absence. • Club meetings are not considered an excusable absence. • Death in the immediate family • Student must present tnAchieves with a death certificate, obituary, or a funeral service remembrance card. • Personal illness • Student must present tnAchieves with a signed doctor’s note to remain eligible. • Illness within the family is not an excusable absence. • Conflict with post-secondary class schedule • Student must present tnAchieves with a class schedule to remain eligible. • If a student has a documented excuse, they must complete an excuse form at www.tnachieves.org and will be assigned an alternate meeting date. • Students have 48 hours after a meeting to contact tnAchieves for a new meeting date to remain eligible. • Only tnAchieves staff members may excuse a student from a meeting.

  36. Mentoring • The mentoring component sets tnAchieves apart from other programs. • Counselors and teachers MAY serve as mentors. Sign up at www.tnachieves.org. • Mentors support the students by: • Attending team meetings with the students • Assisting with admission and financial aid paperwork • Motivating the students to meet deadlines • Encouraging the students to reach their potential
