  4. Ourgoals • Strengthen the protection of GIs at the national, regional and international level • Raise awareness on GIs & sustainable development • Facilitate the exchange of experience among GI groups

  5. Ourvalues • GIs are a global phenomenon (with some 8.000 GIs recognised in the world. Ex: some 2.000 in China and some 1.000 in the Americas, including the US) • GIs are intellectual property rights recognised in the most important international agreements • GIs a crucial for producers and consumers • GIs play a key role for inclusive economic development (on the last 2 points, give examples linked to your denomination)

Major issues for an international GIs agenda • As a result of the WTO impasse, proliferation of bilateral agreements on GIs: need of coherence • Growing costs of GIs groups to oppose TM applications conflicting with GIs in various jurisdictions internationally • Urgent need for countries to ratify and implement the Geneva Act of the WIPO Lisbon Agreement • Need of full GIs protection in the ICANN gTLDs
