  2. oriGIn: Unique & United ! • Global alliance of GIs • Some 500 members (agricultural, non agricultural, wines and spirits GIs) from 40 countries • Established in 2003 • Based in Geneva (+ 4 national antennas & 2 local offices in Brussels and Casablanca)

  4. Ourgoals • Strengthen the protection of GIs at the national, regional and international level • Raise awareness on GIs & sustainable development • Facilitate the exchange of experience among GI groups

  5. Ourvalues • GIs are a global phenomenon (with some 8.000 GIs recognised in the world. Ex: some 2.000 in China and some 1.000 in the Americas, including the US) • GIs are intellectual property rights recognised in the most important international agreements • GIs a crucial for producers and consumers • GIs play a key role for inclusive economic development (on the last 2 points, give examples linked to your denomination)

Major issues for an international GIs agenda • As a result of the WTO impasse, proliferation of bilateral agreements on GIs: need of coherence • Geneva Act of the WIPO Lisbon Agreement has potential to establish an international GIs registry: push for ratification • Sustainability (economic, social and environmental) crucial for business: GIs need to deal with this • Challenges for GIs protection on the Internet (ICANN gTLDs & e-commerce): need to improve rules and practices
