  1. Chemistry C1a: Products from Rocks

  2. Lesson 2: The Periodic TableLearning Objectives • Use element symbols • Describe trends of the alkali metals and halogens • Predict reactivity of elements using periodic trends

  3. Periodic Table Puzzles Use the element symbols to solve the clues. 1. You keep animals in a building made with Barium and Radon. 2. Your drinks are stored in Calcium and Nitrogen. 3. Bromine and Silver like to boast. 4. Soldiers drive a vehicle made from Tantalum, Nitrogen and Potassium. 5. A nasty accident happens if you use Chromium, Arsenic and Hydrogen. 6. You sleep when you have Sodium and Phosphorous. 7. Chromium, Osmium and Sulphur causes a bad mood. 8. A cat could give you a nasty injury using Scandium, Radium Technetium and Hydrogen. 9. Vanadium, Iridium, Uranium and Sulphur can give you a nasty cold. 10. Osmium, Tellurium, Nitrogen, Tantalum, Titanium, Oxygen, Uranium and Sulphur will try to impress people.

  4. The Periodic Table http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFIvXVMbII0 http://www.ptable.com/

  5. The Periodic Table Alkaline earth metals METALOIDS Halogens Transition metals Noble Gases Alkali metals METALS NON METALS

  6. Periodic Table challenge • Name 5 solid elements (at room temp) • Name 4 metallic elements • Name 3 non metals • Name 2 gaseous elements (at room temp) • Name 1 liquid element (at room temp) • Which elements are named after places? • Which elements are named after famous scientists? • Which element symbols are unrelated to their name?

  7. Ferocious Elements • http://www.teachers.tv/video/3518 • F:\ferocious elements question sheet.docx

  8. Bonding • Noble gases are unreactiveand only found aselements • Most other elements (except……?) react to form COMPOUNDS (made up of………) • Compounds contain different types of atoms CHEMICALLY JOINED TOGETHER(BONDED) • Metal + non metal = IONIC BOND (metal TRANSFERS an electron to non metal) • Non metal + non metal = COVALENT BOND (atoms SHARE electrons)

  9. Bonding • finding out about bonding.doc
