Geometric Isomers

Geometric Isomers. Geometric isomers exist because the C=C bond cannot swivel. ‘cis’ and ‘trans’ isomers of alkenes exist. Cis isomers. -the same groups are on the same side of the C=C bond. Trans isomers. - same groups are on opposite sides of the C=C bond.

  1. Geometric Isomers • Geometric isomers exist because the C=C bond cannot swivel. ‘cis’ and ‘trans’ isomers of alkenes exist 12 Chemistry 2.5 organic chemistry CR 07

  2. Cis isomers • -the same groups are on the same side of the C=C bond 12 Chemistry 2.5 organic chemistry CR 07

  3. Trans isomers • - same groups are on opposite sides of the C=C bond 12 Chemistry 2.5 organic chemistry CR 07

  4. Properties of Geometric Isomers • Geometric isomers have similar chemical properties but some different physical properties. • Symmetrical alkenes have the same groups or atoms attached to one of the carbon atoms in the C=C bond. 12 Chemistry 2.5 organic chemistry CR 07

  5. Geometric isomerism does not exist in symmetrical alkenes because one C has two identical groups attached • H H • C=C • H CH2CH3 But-1-ene 12 Chemistry 2.5 organic chemistry CR 07
