  8. Lyceum of History and Natural Sciences, 307 High Street, Mt. Holly. King George III first chartered the Mt. Holly Library in 1765 as the Bridgetown Library and for a time during the nineteenth century the institution also carried the dual name of The Burlington County Lyceum of History and Natural Science. It is the fifth oldest library in New Jersey. The present Georgian style building dates to 1830 and once served as the mansion of James Langstaff, a wealthy farmer. It became the library’s first permanent home in 1957. King George III of England 1738-1820

'Tis the season to celebrate at Historic Smithville Park The holiday season is upon us and Santa will make his entrance on a horsedrawn carriage Sunday to celebrate at Burlington County’s annual Victorian Holiday Celebration at the Historic Smithville Park. The free event runs from noon to 6 p.m. rain or shine, with the mansion and grounds decked out for the holidays. Santa, who has a vintage and Victorian flare with his deep red-and-gold ensemble, is scheduled to arrive at 1 p.m. by horse and carriage and will be available for photos after. Carriage rides will be offered from 1 to 4 p.m. New this year will be the Christmas tree lighting at 4:30 p.m. with the Pemberton High School Carolers singing the songs of the season. A luminary tour of Smithville Village will follow with stops at the restored worker’s house and gallery and visitor center, among others.

Throughout the day, visitors will find a variety of attractions in the park along the Rancocas Creek including: professional ice carving demonstrations; live music; and Dasher’s Holiday Trivia Blizzard Game Show, where visitors can test their knowledge answering seasonal trivia questions. There is even something for those who are working on their holiday shopping list. About two dozen vendors are expected in the holiday marketplace, organizers said. They will have items for sale including handcrafted jewelry, Christmas wreaths, handmade goods made from alpaca wool, wooden gifts, holiday ornaments, artwork, photos and collectibles. www.co.burlington.nj.us/parks

This special event will begin with a panel presentation with participants providing a unique and diverse perspective through an exploration of the topic “relationships and community building” using Dr. James Still’s own thoughts as expressed in his autobiography. Invited speakers include Joseph Laufer, Burlington County Historian; Marc Lorenc, Ph D Candidate in Commu-nity Archeology, UMASS; Angeline Dean, author of Not Just a Slave; Dr. Bev-erly Richardson, VP of BCC; and Leana Sykes, Director of Guidance & Coun-seling, Lindenwold Schools. Saturday, March 15, 2014/3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Victorian Tea with Charity Still Participants are invited to attend a Victorian “High” Tea at which Charity Still, formerly enslaved woman and mother of Dr. James Still and his brothers and sisters, will make an “appearance” to share her story with the guests. Sunday, April 20, 2014/1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Community Gardening Celebration of Earth Day continues with an invitation to local gardeners who would like to join a community garden effort on the grounds of the Center. The day would begin with a presentation by local expert gardeners and con-tinue with readying areas for community gardening. The soil is rich at the Center! Those who want to participate in the community garden must attend this event and will be asked to schedule assistance in caring for other plant-ings on the property. Thursday, May 15, 2014/7:30 – 9:00 p.m. Impressions from Dr. Still’s Garden Diane Emerson, accomplished artist and Medford resident, will provide a demonstration of how herbs, such as those used by Dr. James Still, might also be immortalized through the use of clay. Participants will have the oppor-tunity for a hands-on experience in this artistic process. Diane has demon-strated her tile making on HGTV and one of her pieces was recently published in a juried book entitled 500 Prints on Clay. *Pre-registration is required Thursday, April 10, 2014/ 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. Dr. James Still’s Childhood Years Paul Schopp, well-respected historian and expert on members of the Still family, will provide insights into James Still’s childhood years in Shamong and where and how Dr. Still’s story began. Saturday, May 17, 2014 Burlington County Cradle of Emancipation Bus Tour The Dr. Still Historic Office Site and Education Center will be honored to be included in the bus tour hosted by Joseph Laufer, Burlington County Historian. Two options will be available: to join the bus tour for the full day visit to several area historical sites or to be present as the group stops for a talk and tour at the Church Road site. More details will be forthcoming. Note: Pinelands Garden Club will also have herbs and native plants available for sale on Saturday, May 17, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

White Hill Mansion Fieldsboro I know I've been missing in action lately as far as the Historic Society is concerned, but I don't think I can make it this Saturday.  I've got a big meeting on Sunday with Helen Crossley, our benefactor about another donation and with Christmas right around the corner it's gonna be hectic.  We do have good news thought, we got our 501(c)3 and there's a good chance we're gonna get a grant from the DAR.  If, by chance, I make it Saturday I'll tell you all about it.  If not - Merry Christmas!  Loretta (Kelly) The "White Hill Mansion" was the 18th Century home of the American patriots Robert and Mary Field. An early activist for the American cause, Field was to die shortly after the Revolution began, leaving his wife alone to protect her young family through the ravages of war. More than once her home was occupied and she was frequently interrogated for her alleged patriotic activities. As a result of the British army's capture of Philadelphia in the fall of 1777, most of the American navy, which had been stationed on the Delaware, became trapped upstream. For lack of a better place to moor, the vessels stood at the foot of White Hill in the spring of 1778, near the Field landing. In early May word reached the area that a detachment of British ships was sailing up the river to seize the American fleet and the inhabitants of this tiny community, acting under orders, took the only course open to them to prevent the seizure. When the British reached White Hill on 6 May 1778 they found the riverfront ablaze-local patriots having put the torch to each and every vessel.

  44. John Seitter of Brigantine, Atlantic County, has been named executive director. He brings to the position 16 years of experience in history and tourism. Seitter succeeds Patricia Millen, who left in September after serving since the museum’s inception. Seitter, who praised Millen as a researcher, curator, manager, publicist and grant writer, also acknowledged that his role won’t be to “recreate the wheel.” “I think it’s just to continue all the great work that’s been done,” said Seitter, who has spent the last few weeks studying the history of the steel mill, known for providing the cable used to build some of the nation’s most famous bridges and the reason for the township’s namesake village. Most recently, Seitter was project manager of the Pennsylvania state program commemorating the Civil War, a role in which he focused on improved methods of communication at the local and state levels. He’s currently an adviser to Gettysburg’s Seminary Ridge Museum and the State Museum of Pennsylvania, and teaches history courses on the world wars at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. His past posts have included president of the South Jersey Tourism Corp., executive director of the Camden County Historical Society, and vice chairman of the New Jersey Tourism Task Force, where he created heritage tourism resources throughout the state. He also worked in the hospitality industry and has a graduate degree in public history from Rutgers.
