  1. THE RELIGION OF ISLAM SPECIAL SERIES: The Spread of Islam The Afterlife The Koran (Encourager of Peace or Violence?) Koran vs. the Bible (Various Discrepancies) Jesus Christ and Islam

  2. THE RELIGION OF ISLAM Jesus Christ and Islam

  3. INTRODUCTION • “What shall I do With Jesus” (Mt. 27:22) • It is impossible to read the Bible and the Koran without discovering that Jesus is a central figure in both Islam and Christianity • In our last lesson, we discussed how the Bible has been literally re-written by Muhammad in the accounts of Creation, the Exodus, and the Flood. • Islam and Christianity have absolutely nothing in common. Islam denies the God of the Bible. • This is the last lesson in this series; we continue to look at some key contradictions surrounding Jesus Christ between the Bible and the Koran. • Examine the impact of the cross and the blood sacrifice for our sins – they can’t get past the cross!

  4. WHO IS JESUS? Equals to Messiah? Was He a Prophet? An Apostle? A Priest?

  5. A Prophet • Jesus was no greater than Moses or Noah – what was Christ anointed to do?? • SURAH 5:75 – “The Christ, son of Mary, was but an apostle, and many apostles had (come and) gone before him,” • In the New Testament, Jesus was confessed as the Christ by Simon Peter (Mt. 16:16-18) • While Jesus is called the Messiah and Christ in the Koran, these words mean nothing, because Jesus is not respected and given the full weight of his Messiahship • Islam’s problem is the fact that they admit that He is the Messiah and Christ several times in the Koran

  6. An Apostle • SURAH 2:87 - “Remember we gave Moses the Book and sent after him many an apostle; and to Jesus, son of Mary, we gave clear evidence of the truth, reinforcing him with divine grace, “ • Also, Muhammad was sent as an apostle with a revelation (SURAH 5:15)

  7. An “Exalted Prophet” (who receives special notice and treatment) • SURAH 2:253 – “Of all these apostles we have favoured some over the orders. God has addressed some of them and the stations of some have been exalted over others. And to Jesus, son of Mary, We gave tokens, and reinforced him with divine grace • Also, Muhammad was to receive favoritism (SURAH 33:56)

  8. WAS JESUS THE SON OF GOD? • This is a disturbing thought to the Muslim • They believe that God the Father had relations with a woman and conceived son • The Bible emphatically teaches that Jesus was born to a virgin – a miraculous conception (Mt. 1:18-25’ Luke 1:26-38) • The Koran makes no mention of Joseph (the husband of Mary) • They do not give the credit to the Holy Spirit for Deity clothed with flesh in Mary’s womb • Muslims do believe that Mary was a virgin when Jesus was born

  9. IS JESUS DESERVING OF WORSHIP • Christians understand the Godhead and that Jesus was deserving of worship and in fact, in numerous places demanded our sincere worship. (Jn. 4:24) • There’s numerous passages where men and women worshipped Jesus in His presence and he did not rebuke them (Mt. 2:11; 8:2; 9:18; 14:33; 15:25; Jn. 9:38) • The Koran also leaves out the fact that Jesus never accepted worship (SURAH 5:116-117)

  10. WAS JESUS CRUCIFIED? IF NOT WHO WAS… Judas Iscariot? Simon of Cyrene? One of his disciples? One of the Roman soldiers?

  11. WHO WAS CRUCIFIED? • While the Jews in the 1st Century tried to crucify Jesus, the Koran simply could not • Most Muslims believe the Substitution Theory of the crucifixion • The Muslim world generally believes, that at the very moment Jesus was about to be arrested and crucified, God performed a miracle to cause someone else to suddenly look exactly like Jesus and to be crucified in his place. Speculation as to who this man was, includes: Judas Iscariot, Simon of Cyrene, one of his disciples or one of the Roman soldiers

  12. WHO WAS CRUCIFIED? • SURAH 3:55 – “When God said: ‘O Jesus, I will take you to Myself and exalt you, and rid you of the infidels, and hold those who follow you to above those who disbelieve atill the day of Resurrection. You have then to come back to me when I will judge between you in what you were at variance.” • In the end, Jesus was taken away to Allah in some Elijah/Enoch type fashion to await until the end of time.

  13. WHO WAS CRUCIFIED? • Deedat, is a Muslim who has been criticized by fellow Muslims for proposing the swoon theory that says Jesus was taken down from the cross before he died: "Mr. Deedat ... seems to have a fixed notion about Prophet Jesus' Crucifixion Theory. ... Now why should MrDeedat tell his audience that Jesus was put on the cross and he swooned because nowhere the Qur'an speaks that Jesus was put on the cross and he swooned." (Mohammed Bana, "Allegations Confirmed", p. 3, Muslim)

  14. WHO WAS CRUCIFIED? • Suprisingly. Muslims claim that Allah had to rescue Jesus from being killed: • Maududi writes, "After this, God, who can do any and everything He wills, raised Jesus to Himself and rescued him from crucifixion and the one who was crucified afterwards was somehow or other taken for Christ." (Maududi, The Meaning of the Qur'an, p. 390). • Why would God rescue Jesus, since all the other prophets had been killed by the Jews?

  15. THE CROSS – TIES OUR SINS TO THE SINLESS BLOOD SACRIFICE In the Koran, Jesus is the stumbling block between Islam and Christianity Christ’s atoning death is the perfect and only sacrifice which God will accept on behalf of sinners.

  16. WE CAN’T SEPARATE THE CROSS FROM… The Miracles of Christ • The intent of miracles was to confirm the word and His Deity. (Mark 16:17) • Why are the miracles not enough to convince a Muslim? The Death and Resurrection of Christ • It’s important to note what was purposely left out of the Koran! • Muslims Reject that Jesus died and that he was resurrected!

  17. WE CAN’T SEPARATE THE CROSS FROM… The Death and Resurrection of Christ • SURAH 4:157 - That they said (in boast), "We killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah.;- but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjecture to follow, for of a surety they killed him not. (Qur’an 4:157, never quoted by Jehovah’s Witnesses or Arians who quote other Koranic passages to trash the trinity)

  18. WE CAN’T SEPARATE THE CROSS FROM… The Death and Resurrection of Christ • SURAH 4:156-159 - "Regarding Crucifixion of Jesus: And for their unbelief, and their uttering against Mary a mighty calumny, and for their saying, 'We slew the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, the Messenger of God'...yet they did not slay him, neither crucified him, only a likeness of that was shown to them. Those who are at variance concerning him surely are in doubt regarding him, they have no knowledge of him, except the following of surmise; and they did not slay him of certainty... no indeed; God raised him up to Him; God is Almighty, All-Wise. There is not one of the people of the Book Bible] but will assuredly believe in him before his death, and on the Resurrection Day [at the end of time] he will be a witness against them." (Qur'an 4:156-159, never quoted by Jehovah’s Witnesses or Arians who quote other Koranic passages to trash the trinity)

  19. WE CAN’T SEPARATE THE CROSS FROM… The Blood Sacrifice • Points from law given to Moses forward to the death of our sinless savior • The blood sacrifices performed by the Israelites were not enough. The guilt of sin remained. • Heb 10:3-5 But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sin every year. For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, "Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me; • Heb 10:10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

  20. WE CAN’T SEPARATE THE CROSS FROM… The Blood Sacrifice • How about the blood redemption? • We have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of our sins • Eph. 1:7 states, "In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;" • Whatever method that Islam prescribes for forgiveness of sins is sorely lacking in effectiveness or ability. • The meaning of redemption is "to release on payment of ransom" and the price paid was the life of Christ (read Romans 4:25; Matt. 20:28).

  21. WE CAN’T SEPARATE THE CROSS FROM… The Church • We cannot separate Christ from His Church. • He built His church (Mt. 16:18) • It has been purchased with His blood! • How can one be saved and not be part of the church? • 1 Peter 3:21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, • Gal 3:26-27 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

  22. CONCLUSION • Reminder: • Again, respect their culture and expound on our common beliefs – build bridges… • As Americans, we need to understand that any attempt to turn a Muslim away from Islam is considered aggression against them – in their eyes even discussion of our Bible-based beliefs is thought as blasphemy against Allah

  23. CONCLUSION • My friends, according to the bible, Allah is not God, Muhammad is not his prophet, and the Koran is not the Word of God. • Islam is a false religion and utterly without power to save one soul from sin. Islam does not recognize Jesus Christ as Savior. • No person, no matter how religious or how sincere he may be, can possess truth or salvation apart from the Lord Jesus Christ. • Christ’s atoning death is the perfect and only sacrifice which God will accept on behalf of sinners. • My message to Muslims is that they, like all men, are hopelessly lost in and because of sin.

  24. CONCLUSION • What saith the Scriptures concerning Salvation? • Islam teaches that in order to be saved; “Believe in God and in his Apostle Muhammad, and do what God requires, and if God so wills he will accept you." (Miller, page 81). • The Scriptures teach simple steps to enter Heaven: • HEAR – Rom. 10:17 • BELIEVE – Jn 8:24 • REPENT – Lk. 13:3 • CONFESS – Mt. 10:32 • BE BAPTIZED – Mk. 16:16 ….be added to the church that Jesus built (Mt. 16:18) • BE FAITHFUL – Rev. 2:10
