  4. Religious Figures • Abraham- 1st prophet; father of all three religions • Muhammad-seal of the prophets; believe Muhammad was the last prophet to be sent by God (Allah) • Allah- God in Arabic • Many prophets- Adam, Noah, Ishmael, Moses, Jesus

  5. Abraham Because Judaism, Christianity, and Islam all recognize Abraham as their first prophet, they are also called Abrahamic religions. -the father of all three religions

  6. Beliefs • Monotheistic • Allah is the sole and sovereign ruler of the universe • Muhammad is the final prophet • Obedience to Allah’s Will • 10 Commandments • Treat Qur’an with great respect-believe Qur’an is from Allah and is sacred

  7. Beliefs • Muslims believe that Allah sent his revelation, the Qur’an to the prophet Muhammad through the angel Gabriel. • The Qur’an contains verses in Arabic that tell Muslims to worship one god, and explains how they should treat others properly.

  8. The Five Pillars of Islam These are the duties all Muslims must perform and help to put their faith into action 1. Declaration of Faith: stating there is only one God and Muhammad is his prophet Prayer: 5 times a day in direction of Mecca Alms Giving: giving to the poor and needy Fasting: abstaining from food during the month of Ramadan (sunrise to sunset) Hajj: pilgrimage to Mecca Practices and Rituals

  9. Practices and Rituals • Many Muslims also observe dietary rules, in origin similar to those of Judaism, that forbid certain foods (like pork), outlaw alcohol, and dictate how animals should be slaughtered for food.

Spread and Origin • Islam rose in the early 7th century in the city of Mecca (Saudi Arabia). • It developed from both Judaism and Christian traditions AND cultural values of the nomadic Bedouins in Arabia. • Islam expanded into area such as North Africa, Europe, Asia through trade routes. • Has become one of the most popular religions of the world and in the Middle East.
