A Profit is born • Muhammad was born on the Arabian Peninsula, in Mecca around 570 A.D. • He was an orphan, and lived with his grandfather and uncle • He believed that you should help the poor, give food to strangers , and take care of the sick • As a boy he helped his uncle herd flocks of sheep and became known as al-amin which means the trustworthy one.

  3. Start of Islam • As the story goes, while Muhammad was in a cave, the angel, Gabriel, told him to be a messenger of Allah. • Muhammad began preaching in Mecca about the newly formed Islam, and how there was only one god. • The first followers were mostly his family and servants.

  4. Rise of Islam • He then began preaching to others in Mecca. • Many poor people liked what Muhammad had to say. • Many of the people of Mecca began converting to Islam • The rich were worried about his teachings because he was telling them to share their wealth

Persecution of Islam • The rich and powerful people of Mecca started to persecute the poor slaves and workers who converted to Islam. • They forced them to leave the city or put them in jail. • Soon, Muslims began to leave Mecca. They went to a nearby city called Medina. • Mecca leaders plotted to kill Muhammad before he escaped them and went to Medina.
