ITU GSC-15 Highlights: Innovations in Standards and Global Collaboration

Highlights of current ITU-T activities (1) • 2009 saw increased participation • New Focus Groups: Cloud and Smart Grid • New CTO group formed: • Decided to review the standards landscape (see GSC-15-PLEN-89) • ITU Interop events • First event on IPTV in July, more to follow • New video codec partnership • Joint Collaborative Team (JCT) • New work on Telepresence

Highlights of current ITU-T activities (2) • Climate Change • Participation in COP 15 Copenhagen • Raising awareness of the link between ICTs and climate change • World’s first Virtual Symposium • Methodology for ICT sector advanced • Universal charging solution for mobile phones • Accessibility • New accessibility web portal • 10+ events. Partnerships with EBU, WIPO, WSC, IGF

Highlights of current ITU-R activities (1) • Powerline Telecommunications (PLT) • Reports addressing the impact of PLTs and measurement methods finalized • Recommendation to be finalized by end 2010 • Short-range devices • Reports addressing technical and operating parameters and measurement techniques finalized •  RFID devices • Recommendation to identify frequency bands for RFID devices in progress

Highlights of current ITU-R activities (2) • Emergency communications • Recommendation on radiocommunications used for emergency in manned space flight • Recommendation and reporton use of systems in fixed-satellite service(FSS) in the event of natural disasters • Recommendation and report on use of mobile-satellite service (MSS) in disaster response and relief • Development and maintenance of the database of available frequencies/frequency bands for use in emergency situations • Report and draft Recommendation on use of UHF bands for PPDR

Highlights of current ITU-R activities (3) • Broadcasting • Report addressing features of 3D TV • Report addressing multi-channel sound technology • Recommendation addressing loudness control •  IMT • Final stages of evaluation for the terrestrial component • Submission/evaluation process developed for the satellite component •  WRC-12 • The draft report to the Conference Preparatory Meeting has been finalized

  8. Plenipotentiary Conference 2010 4 to 22 October 2010 The key event at which ITU Member States decide on ITU’s future role of the organization. Sets the Union's general policies, adopts four-year strategic and financial plans and elects the senior management team, the members of Council and the members of the Radio Regulations Board.
