  1. VP-Technical Activities Report Daniel Zeng ITSS VP for Technical Activities zeng@email.arizona.edu ITSS ExCom/BOG Meeting ITSC 2010, Madeira, Portugal September 19, 2010

  2. TCs Needing Attention • Public Transportation Management • Intelligent Water Transportation Systems • ITS for Air Traffic • Port Automation and Management • Vehicular Safety Technologies and Applications • ITS Education (newly established)

  3. Active TCs IEEE ITSS Technical Activities

  4. Active TCs (Contd.) IEEE ITSS Technical Activities

  5. Active TCs (Contd.)

  6. Active TCs (Contd.)

  7. Conference Coordination • Worked closely with ITSC 2010 Team • All TC Chairs have been automatically assigned AE role • Multiple special sessions being organized • All TCs helping recruit reviewers • Helping IV with providing AEs • A proposal: starting in ITSC 2011, experimenting with at least 2 tracks from • Communications Networks, Mobile Comm., Traffic and Travel Mgmt, Logistics & Services

  8. ITSS Chapters • The Beijing chapter has been very active • Working with ITSS President & VP for Membership to establish a Wuhan chapter in China • Working on a policy document detailing responsibilities and privileges of Chapters • Next step: • Trying to establish chapters in Vienna, Tokyo, Toronto

  9. IEEE ITSS Technical Activities ITSS Website - Operations • IEEE Tech Navigator database: continued work on ITS portion • A proposal: creating IEEE ITSNow, following IEEE CS’ ComputingNow, coordinated through technical subcommittees • Closer coordination with the Newsletters & Magazine to post feature articles • Better coordination with the Transactions & possibly ITS conferences to feature most popular Xplorer downloads • RSS feeds already online • An award section done • A TC Corner (committed so far: MESA; Comm. Networks; Mobile Comm.)

  10. ITSS Online Promotions • Jointly with the VP for Membership, we are starting on google sponsored search campaigns • An account created with google; budget allocation plan and performance measures being refined • On wikipedia, 151 entries have been identified with ITS relevance • 2 rounds of efforts taken to add the ITSS website as a reference entry • 27 remain active; others have been taken down by wikipedia (the same IP used, editor deletion)

  11. IEEE Smart Grid Initiative • Joint work with ITSS President • IEEE Smart Grid is an IEEE-wide initiative led by IEEE Standards Association and TAB -“The Smart Grid has come to describe a next-generation electrical power system that is typified by the increased use of communications and information technology in the generation, delivery and consumption of electrical energy.“ - Being broadly construed, almost like IBM’s “Smart Planet”

  12. IEEE SG Virtual Organization Steering/Management Team J.R.B. D.M. et. al. S-C-J + B-A-S TA/Societies Marketing & PR Comp Soc John Waltz VTS TBD ComSoc Stefano Galli SG Team OTHERS TBD PES TBD IEEE-SA SG Portal & Social Media TBD

  13. Objectives (my interpretation) • In strategic areas, explore very early standards opportunities and establish IEEE’s proactive, visionary role as a technical entity • Some seed funding from IEEE SA for workshops

  14. Society Involvement • IEEE Communications Society (the most active one) • IEEE VTS (which recommended us be involved; already identified leaders from their society) • IEEE Control Society • IEEE Computer Society

  15. A Sample Project from Communications Society • Vision Task Force will create a rich set of forward-looking use cases and applications scenarios for SG - snap shots of years 2015, 2020, and 2030 that will characterize the SG paradigm from end user, and all relevant industry segments point of view • Forming technical study groups to complete the Vision publication (series) • A research forum planned for Oct. 7-8, 2010 in the DC area with 16-20 experts

  16. ITS Involvement • Do we want to be involved? By ourselves or jointly with VTS? • Initial Steps: • Establishing an ad-hoc committee • Possibly participating in Comm. Society’s Oct. meeting • Setting up a similar vision project (or our own project consistent with SmartGrid objectives)
