  1. Differences Between Hemp and Marijuana HempWiki

  2. Many people often confuse hemp with marijuana when in reality they are vastly different. There are many differences.

  3. ● Appearance ● Chemical Composition ● Cultivation ● Uses ● Legality Let’s look at the top 5 differences between them.

  4. Appearance Hemp plants have very clear physical characteristics that differentiate them from other cannabis plants. These plants, especially hemp grown for fiber or seed, grow tall and slim – they can easily reach up to 20 ft. Its leaves grow quite large and are concentrated at the top. Their branches and trunks tend to be much denser and have a higher fiber count than marijuana.

  5. Chemical Composition The main difference between the two is in its chemical composition, specifically in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the psychoactive element responsible for marijuana’s psychological effects. Marijuana contains 5-20% THC content on average. Hemp, on the other hand, has 0.3% or less THC.

  6. Both hemp and marijuana contain cannabinoids (CBD). However, the former contains much higher levels of CBD.

  7. Cultivation The environment in which hemp and marijuana are grown are strikingly different. Hemp crop requires neither pesticides and fertilizers nor much care. It can adapt to any climate. Hemp grows closely together in upward direction without producing wide side branches.

  8. Unlike hemp, marijuana requires a carefully controlled, warm, and humid atmosphere for proper growth. Marijuana cultivators have to cautiously monitor it throughout its growth stage.

  9. Uses Hemp has a vast number of uses. Its fiber, flowers, and seeds are used to produce healthy dietary supplements, skincare products, clothing, construction materials and accessories. You can know more about them on hempwiki.

  10. Marijuana, on the other hand, has limited uses. It is used for medical and recreational purposes. Only the flowering part of marijuana is used and the rest of the plant is almost useless as it doesn’t contain particularly large amounts of fiber.

  11. Legality At one time, both hemp and marijuana were illegal. But the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 removed hemp from the Controlled Substances Act and made hemp agriculture and products became legal in all 50 states.

  12. Marijuana, on the other hand, is still categorized as a Schedule 1 drug. This means that any marijuana product is considered illegal under federal law. Each state has its own laws on marijuana. Some states allow for medicinal usage by certain patients, and a fewer number also allows adults to use high-THC marijuana for recreational purposes.

  13. All these differences are enough to clear the confusion between hemp and marijuana. I hope next time you can distinguish between them both.
