Nebraska Action Coalition Regional Nurse Leadership Report

This report highlights the efforts of the Nebraska Action Coalition to build a leadership trajectory program targeting the 40 under 40 nurse leaders in Nebraska, focusing on mentoring, coaching, advanced leadership education, and recognition. Jonas Scholar Leadership Project • Nebraska Action Coalition Project Goal #2: Build a leadership trajectory program targeting the 40 under 40 honorees (representing gender, geographic, and ethnic diversity), based on State Implementation Program 1 grant assessment data incorporating the initiatives of mentoring/coaching, advanced leadership education, and recognition. • Currently the Nebraska Action Coalition has 4 regions in Nebraska with leadership teams. The Nebraska Action Coalition has successfully engaged the state in identifying 81 honorees of the “40 under 40 Nurse Leader” awards. The Nebraska Action Coalition has initiated the process of developing mentor-mentee dyads.

  3. Jonas Scholar Leadership Project • Opportunity Statement: Nebraska is a diverse state consisting of both urban and rural regions. The Nebraska Nurses have the opportunity to enhance the engagement of the “40 under 40 Nurse Leaders” in engagement with mentor-mentee coaching, and future leadership on boards and decision making bodies. • Jonas Project: The Jonas Scholars are going to help individualize strategies to enhance engagement of the 40 under 40 Nurse Leader Award recipients and the mentor-mentee dyads.

Regional Interviews • Key Findings • Leaders in Regions are directly mentoring both their 40 under 40 recipients (if applicable) and mentoring their own leadership team of nurses within their organizations • Some Regions had limited 40 under 40 award recipients due to changes in leadership • Regional Leadership Committee Members have organizational leadership programs • Regional Leadership Committee Members identify challenges of finding time to promote NAC beyond their own organizations and organizational meetings

Nebraska Best Practices • Best Practices • South Region: Good Samaritan Hospital uses tele-conferencing to support both clinical education and leadership development of Critical Access Hospitals connected with their organizations • West Region: Panhandle Nursing Leadership meets quarterly with Regional West Medical Center CNE to support Critical Access Hospitals for shared leadership experience. • East Region: Faculty incorporates leadership skills in all nursing course work to begin plant the seeds early. • North Region: Promote leadership development through participation in internal decision making bodies

  7. Nebraska Best Practices • Best Practices • All Regions: Have leadership training and programing within their organizations • NAC representatives leading local meetings to orient to NAC and IOM goals.

  8. 40 Under 40 Award Recipients Analysis 2012 40 under 40 Leadership Award Recipients East: 77% West: 2% South: 12% North 7% Generational Cohort Millennials 28% and Gen Xers 71% Most of 2012, 40 under 40 award recipients were Gen Xers from the East and South Regions.

  9. 40 Under 40 Award Recipients Analysis 2014 40 Under 40 Leadership Award Recipients East: 78% West: 4% South: 12% North 2% Generational Cohort Millennials 40% and Gen Xers 58% 40 under 40 award recipients were more evenly distributed but most are Gen Xers from East Region

  10. Jonas Recommendations • Implement Engagement Package for Regional Nurse Leaders across the State of Nebraska. Explains the basics (IOM report, the NAC, and why leadership is vital) • January is Mentorship Month • Nursing Retreats • Organizational Use • Nursing Student Orientation • Identify 40 under 40 recipients current mentee-mentor relationships within their organization or community

  11. Jonas Recommendations • Focus on increasing 40 under 40 award receipts in South, North and West regions. Nursing leadership has a potential for great impact in these areas. • Build upon Best Practices that exist in each region • Rural Regional Liaison to work closely with NAC to engage through communication with future nursing leaders
