Some Plant Vocabulary: • cell wall- the stiff outer covering of a plant cell • chlorophyll- green material found in plants that is used for making food. • botanist- a scientist who studies and classifies plants • photosynthesis- the process by which plants make food • ..\Video Clips\Photosynthesis.asf

  4. Two Ways Plants Differ: • 1. method of reproduction -seeds from flowers or cones -spores (tiny reproductive cells) 2. structure (presence or absence of transport tubes or veins) vascular plants - have veins non-vascular plants – don’t have veins ..\Video Clips\Plant_Kingdom.asf

  5. Traits of Flowering Plants: • All have flowers • Seeds grow inside fruits that cover and protect the seeds • All have transport tubes (vascular)

  6. THE CONIFERS • conifer- a cone-bearing plant • produce seeds in cones and have transport tubes • have needle-like leaves • produce two types of cones • 1. pollen cone (pollen is a dust-like reproductive substance) • 2. seed cone
