  2. Key discussion #1 What factors influence what, why and how people eat? Question 1: Why do people eat? How do our diverse cultural situations impact on our food consumption? In other words: What types of things influence the way we eat food?

  3. Question 2:What influences what or how people eat? Cultural backgroud Location Taste Availablity of food Health (Medical conditions & allergies) Income vs price of food Environmental factors (weather) Convenience (cooking vs fast food) Food advertising & peer influence Time & lifestyle Age & gender Socio-economic status

  4. Choose three factors from the list to explain in detail eg. Avaliability of food This would effect the way people can access food. In some regions, there maybe a rich source of a particular food, such as meat in Australia and rice in Asian countries. This would also effect the way people eat, if there wasn’t a lot of food avaliable ...

  5. Key discussion #2 Is there enough food in the world to feed all the people? The reasons and importance of eating from region to region... How do our diverse cultural situations impact on our food consumption? In other words: What types of things influence the way we eat food? Food, one assumes, provides nourishment; but Americans eat it fully aware that small amounts of poison have been added to improve its appearance and delay its putrefaction.John Cage

  8. INVESTIGATION TASK #1 What reasons could there be for a food shortage and why? (political, social, enviormental) Which countries or regions have had a history of food shortage? (you may like to use a map to demonstrate this) Choose a specific region to focus on. What hardships do the people in this region suffer? (what is the main reason for their food shortage) What is being done either in this specific region or across the globe in order to break this cycle of food shortage or food poverty? (use the suggested websites below)

  9. INVESTIGATION TASK #1 Discussion Point: “Who’s problem is world hunger?” Outside of the classroom, you are to interview an adult to assist in your understanding of world food distribution. Use the above question ‘Who’s problem is world hunger?’ to help you find out what other’s think of this global issue. You may like to share some of your knowledge or show them the ‘If This World Were a Village of 100 people’ ( http://www.miniature-earth.com/ ). You may also like to ask about the above questions in order to add depth to your responses. *DON’T FORGET TO TAKE PAPER & PEN TO RECORD YOUR DISCUSSION Record: who you spoke with (their name and what relationship they have with you ie parent, neighbour etc) what you were able to share with them (main points) what you were able to learn from them (main points)

Find a traditional recipe from your chosen region and tell us about hhow it has been adapted to make it Australian. What makes it Australian? Why have these changes been made? Example: Italian’s call our dominos style pizza “vegetable cake” in reference to pineapple Spanish people eat really late at night french have an ultra long lunch break people in america have a fast paced life and eat fast food, fast Traditional AUSTRLIAN (Indigenous foods... what did the Indigenous people eat... why don’t we consider this to be our traditional food instead of snags and barbecues.??? ) Find out traditional foods from these places: Food, one assumes, provides nourishment; but Americans eat it fully aware that small amounts of poison have been added to improve its appearance and delay its putrefaction.John Cage
