Populations at increased risk for abusing alcohol and other drugs • Contributing factors are thought to be • Stress related to acclamation • Bereavement ( loss of country, status, possessions, etc.) • Change (new environment, financial status) • Trauma (war, famine, torture, etc.) • High risk for PTSD and high rates of PTSD found in clients actually interviewed Southeast Asian Substance Use Patterns and Associated Problems in the United States • Acclamation to American norms, resulted in changes in substance use patterns and consumption increases over recent generations • Bicultural Asian Americans at greater risk to drink excessively • Among Asians, Japanese women have the highest rate of heavy drinking (women)

Implications for Practice and Research Clinic Assessment • Employ a more heterogeneous perspective – diagnosis • Cultural Context (cultural sensitive assessment tools) Intervention • Focus on multiple losses • Stress-related Somatic Concerns • Daily Problems of Adaption Recommended Interventions Include: • Psycho-education • Role Modeling • Coping skills to bolster self- efficiency and deal with stressful environmental challenges and to strengthen support networks within the family and community • With regard to substance abuse, avoid insight-oriented therapies • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Directions for Future Research • Focus on differences of each ethnic group
