  1. GOD’S SURVIVAL GUIDE – The Ten Commandments Exodus 20

  2. “This Present Evil World” • It’s difficulty to Christians. • Rules of Nature – break them and there are consequences. Observe them and peace follows. • God’s laws guide and protect a people – they flow from His character. • “A people cannot be made happy and successful merely by the things which they possess. How they live is more important than what they have.”

  3. “No Other gods before me” • “Thou shalt believe in God.” • All nations have a religious sense thru time. • Sometimes we change the object of worship. • 5 common objects – wealth, fame, pleasure, power or knowledge. • None of these is sinful – but the excess is! • Would you like a meal of pickles and pepper? • Eccl. Teaches a balance.

  4. No Graven Images • Can we reduce God to a picture? • “Holy” objects – buildings, robes and crosses aren’t divine. • John 14:8-9. Jesus IS His teaching. Crucified, not because He said, “consider the lilies how they grow”, but because He said, “consider the Pharisees how they lie.” • We see the true God in His actions – grief, compassion, determination

  5. Honor God’s Name • Prov. 23:7 – “As he thinks in his heart, so is he.” • We profane God’s name by: Language – swearomaniacs. Not taking Him seriously – “An empty, meaningless faith may be worse than none.” Christianity might work if we tried it. Hiding from Him – Adam and Eve needed help. I John 1:9

  6. That special day • “When a man labors not for a livelihood, but to accumulate wealth, then he is a slave. Therefore it is that God granted the Sabbath. For it is by it that we know we are not working animals, born to eat and labor.” • Not a day of worship, but of rest. • We use a telescope to view the stars. Sabbath was used to view God.

  7. Honor parents • The centerpiece of God’s law – transitions from living with Him to living in the world. • Sacrifices of parents for a helpless infant. • Parents should be honorable. • In the family we see each others weaknesses as no others do. This honor is difficult. • Society depends on this “law”. • Honor is transferrable – to school, law enforcement, job site.

  8. Do not murder • Some killing is accidental. • Some killing is authorized. • Some is murder – an atrocity on Friday. Do you feel the pain? For many it will never go away. • There are other ways to destroy – Matt. 5:21f • Live and let live – Luke 10:31-32 • Live and help live – Luke 10:33ff

  9. Do not commit adultery • “50% of all human misery is caused by the violation of this commandment.” • Why is it wrong? (1) God said so. (2) We know “naturally”, Psalm 51:3. (3) Promotes other troubles. (robs peace of mind, conflicts within me, distorts thinking, destroys a soul.) • “Keep clear of concealment. Keep clear of the need of concealment.” • What if I’m guilty – seek forgiveness – John 8:11.

  10. Do not steal • 3 philosophies • What is my neighbors is also mine, and I’ll take it. • What is mine is mine, and I’ll keep it. Coffin men – no room for anyone else. Luke 12:16ff. • What’s mine is mine, but I’ll share. Barnabas in Acts 4

  11. No false witness • Behind much gossip is jealousy. • False sympathy is a disguise – “Isn’t it sad about…” • Only truth can help us judge righteously – John 7:24 • Relevant truth – Sometimes the teller of a sin is worse than the one who commits it.

  12. No covetousness • A Catholic priest on the confessional – “Of all the confessions I’ve heard, not one confessed covetousness.” • This desire destroys contentment. • How much is enough? • How current are God’s laws for today?
