  1. Children and Breakfast

  2. Rapid Writing • Work with your elbow partner (no fewer than 2, no more than 3) • Divide your chart paper into sections so that each person has two (2) spaces to write • Ex. 2 students need 4 sections and 3 students need 6 sections • Grab a handful of markers and get ready to write!

  3. Rapid Writing Write, draw, scribble about the following topics. You only have 2 minutes per section. Benefits of Breakfast Benefits of Breakfast How I feel when I don’t eat breakfast How I feel when I don’t eat breakfast

  4. Now….Share your Ideas Any volunteers? What are the main themes discussed?

  5. Stick-it/Stack-it • Individually - Use the 3 sticky notes provided and write down three (3) reasons why you skip breakfast (or may miss breakfast) • One idea per sticky note • With your partner(s) place your sticky notes into categories • Class Discussion • What are the main reasons that we are skipping/missing breakfast?

  6. Breaking it down We have brainstormed some ideas about: • the benefits of breakfast • how we feel when we don’t eat breakfast • the reasons for not eating breakfast What does the research say about breakfast eating ?

  8. Write it… What should a balanced breakfast include? What can parents do to help their child eat breakfast in the morning? What can parents do to help create healthy eating habits for their child? Create a healthy, child friendly breakfast.

  9. Research Activity • Conduct research with 15 people in class and record their opinions about the importance of breakfast.

  10. Research Steps Step 1 - What question will you ask? Remember, it has to do with the importance of eating breakfast Step 2 - Ask your question to 15 classmates Keep the answers simple (ex. Yes or No, this or that, this is better than that etc.) Step 3 – Record your findings Step 4 – Present your findings Step 5 – Concluding statement (what you learned)

  13. Research Activity – Step 5 • Final statement: • My research concluded that 67% (10/15) of students have more energy in the morning when they eat breakfast.

  14. Review • Breakfast is an important meal • Children, teens and adults function better if they eat a healthy, well-balanced breakfast • Children learn their behaviours from caregivers so it is important to model healthy eating (including breakfast)
