Action Learning From Andrew Clarke Refugee Assessment and Guidance Unit London Met. University
Action Learning Set cycle • The participants take it in turn to present a topic which is an issue of challenge for them; • The other participants ask open questions to help clarify what the issues are and to help the presenter identify options for action; • The presenter decides on a course of action; • At a meeting of the set usually 6 weeks later, progress on the planned action is reviewed
Action Learning is… • Learning from yourself • Learning from observing each other • Reflection • Taking Action
Action Learning isn’t … • Therapy • Quality Circles • Advice sessions • Cross Examination • Showcasing • Voyeurism • Solving Puzzles (Puzzles are problems with one right answer or solution)
The Process • Describing the issue (Max. 5 minutes) • Pause (1 Minute) • Reprise (30 seconds) • Questioning but no ‘why’ questions (Max. 20 Minutes) • Not advice • Presenter explores options • Presenter decides action • Implement (between sessions) • Review
