What is formative assessment? • "theprocessofseeking and interpretingevidence for use by learners and theirteachers, to identifywherethelearnersare in theirlearning, wheretheyneed to go and how best to getthere" (Assessment Reform Group 2002, p.2) • Key idea: • Evidenceaboutlearning is collected, interpreted and used to adjustteaching and learning to bettermeet student needs.

  6. Portfolios A PORTFOLIO “... provides a complex and comprehensive view of student performance in context. It is a portfolio when the student is a participant in, rather than the object of assessment. Above all, a portfolio is a portfolio when it provides a forum that encourages students to develop the abilities to become independent, self-directed learners” (Paulson, Paulson and Meyers, 1991, p. 63). • Portfolio as a process not only as a product • Focus on Process/Learning Portfolio • Reflection (metacognition) as a key aspect (Zubizarreta 2009)

  8. Project aim • Improve the quality of our courses by integrating formative assessment practices through digital portfolios • Pedagogical tool → learning portfolios • Digital tool → OneNote for Classroom

The Contextofourproject • English 1, Grunnskolelærerutdanning 5-10 • 2 courses at HVL (15 sp. each): • a Language course • 3 obligatory assignments • final exam: portfolio assessment • a Literature/culture course • 3 obligatory assignments • final exam: 6-hours written exam • 1 course at HSN (30 sp.); combined language and literature/culture modules • 6 obligatory assignments • final exam: portfolio (40%) + oral exam (60%)

  15. Questions Formative assessment is a two-way street: - How do you motivate students to complete low stakes tasks? - What are students’ expectations regarding higher education courses? Logistical challenges: - How to make time for the full cycle of submission, feedback (peer/teacher), revision and reflection for all obligatory tasks during the course of a busy semester? Technical/digital challenges: - How can higher education teachers get the support they need for digital tools to become benefits rather than challenges?
