  3. AFTER THE RAINS • One of the group also played a role in the recovery of the city of Hull following the floods in the role as Operations Manager of the Hull Community Wardens. • Working alongside the Hull City Council, and other housing associations, the community Wardens provided support and an advisory service to many of the elderly and vulnerable residents in the city who were victims of the floods. • Many of these people were not in a position to be able to liaise with Insurance Representatives. • In total well over 12,000 properties were damaged by flood water. • Many council properties including many senior schools and some leisure centres were damaged.

AFTER THE RAINS • In total well over 12,000 properties in the city were damaged by flood water. • Many council properties including many senior schools and some leisure centres were damaged. • The rivers did not flood • Caused by a combination of lack of maintenance of pumping stations, lack of early warnings of heavy rains, to authorities and other private organisations, who control the water courses • No common policing of the many owners of different water drainage systems.

  5. After The Rains • Problems were encountered by • Poor workmanship by insurance approved contractors and sub contractors. • High excesses applied to policies • Over the last three years insurance costs have risen in some cases by 100% • Insurance companies across the board refuse to insure flooded properties

  6. After The Rains • Not all properties can be protected from future flooding • Town planners should design in future flood proof properties in high risk areas. • Insurance companies should offer value for money Insurance for flooded properties without flood cover if occupier requests. • Insurance companies should offer advice on flood proofing of properties insured.
