  3. game 1 - 'playful form-making' The form making game for project 1 was quite helpful in the way that its brief required the group to focus entirely on form. We were able to ignore the usual distractions of practicalities, and create an interesting form to fit to our site. This undoubtedly evoked a strong emphasis on form for project 1. Working in a team provided many opportunities for discussions about architecture and its styles and our interpretations of their definitions.

  4. Architecture 2b 2002 Project 1: Discovering Architecture “You have been engaged to design a ‘Coastal Discovery Centre’ to be located on a site close to Bells Beach, Victoria. This building complex is envisaged to become a major tourist attraction along the coast; a place where visitors can ‘discover’ the Surf Coast; the environment, tourist attractions, surfing and other cultures, national parks…” Bells Beach Coastal Discovery Centre Jasmine McKay 100229069

  18. construction concept Reinforced concrete has been used because of its flexibility to be formed into various, and fluid forms, such as those of the Discovery Centre. Intricate detailing of the surfaces of concrete have been created by the printing of vegetation such as leaves, small gumnuts, coral, seeds and numerous other types all found on site. (see right) The Discovery Centre is stabilised by angled foundation ties. Enclosed in slightly tinted glass between a steel frame, the walkway of recycled timber leads visitors along the journey towards the Interpretive Centre, passing numerous rooms with unique outlooks to discover the Surf Coast area.

  19. project 1 - 'discovering architecture' The development of the form concept for Project 1 was a lot of fun. I was taken by the natural composition of the tiny gumnuts along the twig and developed their form into that of the Coastal Discovery Center.Although I did create a basic floor plan for the Center, I would have liked to develop this aspect of the design further with greater detail.The development stages of this design were rather brief as I decided to spend most of my time creating a 3D CAD model of the Center. It was my first attempt at creating such a model and due to my limited digital experience, details of the design such as wall thicknesses were omitted.By inserting the captured model images into Photoshop, I was able to place the Center on its site to create a sense of place. The introduction of people into these images aided the perceived reality of the design concept.

  21. project 2 - 'discovering tectonics' For this highly tectonic project, I looked at many different ways of how my design for the Coastal Discovery Center could be constructed. I researched concrete construction in the libraries, but the most helpful resource proved to be the internet, finding many results that were relevant to my ideas. I was after a simple but sophisticated, clean design, and decided that the use of reinforced concrete was a suitable method to approach, using isolation joints between the floor slab and concave walls. Other major aspects of this project were the use of agricultural (or sump) drains, DPCs, and the interesting relationship between the concrete and glazing.

  23. project 4 - 'composing architecture @ 1:1' Project 4 was perhaps the most time consuming of all projects, but with very pleasing results. I found it to be incredibly rewarding to work in a large group environment. Despite our initial fears that some team members would not fully contribute to the team’s effort, we were in the end pleased with our results and our team members. Our group was one of few technical skills, but with the help of Des in the workshop and the support of each other, we managed to develop our skills in the workshop and also in group communications. I believe that our final outcome for Project 4 was, tectonically, very well resolved. Due to time constraints, we made adjustments to Kristine’ design. She seemed somewhat disappointed in our choices, feeling that we may have excluded a vital element of her design intent.With more time, I believe that our final presentation for Project 4 would have been exceptional.
