The nature of the activity means what makes the activity different from other activities. • Key features of knowledge are used to describe the nature of the activity: • Indoor / outdoor • Performance area • Directly competitive / indirectly competitive • Individual / team • Pace of performance • Scoring system • Presentation of performance / public nature

  6. Badminton is an indoor activity Badminton courts have a standard layout This provides a consistent nature to practise within and keeps the activity fair for all performers because they have to compete within the same conditions.

  7. Badminton is directly competitive because your opponent can move you around the court. You have to respond to their shots. Individual activities specifically suit people who like to rely on themselves and have a strong self belief.

  8. How would you describe the nature of the performance in terms of its intensity? fast, explosive intensity with short breaks between points. You need to have specific physical qualities to perform effectively in activities with this nature

  9. The performance is judged using the objective measurement of score. The umpire and line judges make the decisions and award the points.

  10. Top events can attract large crowds. School performance usually requires performing in front of peers. You need to be able to cope with the demands (personal / mental) of performing in front of people.

This is what the marker gets to use when marking your answer AREA 1 - PERFORMANCE APPRECIATION Key Concept 1 - The overall nature and demands of quality performance Nature of performance The response should focus on the following: Individual/team Duration of event Number of participants Environment (indoor/outdoor) Directly/indirectly competitive Scoring system Rules Codes of conduct Spectators/audience For example…in a tennis game there can be 2 players (single) or 4 players (doubles)…a game can last 3 sets or 5 sets. A women’s game last for 3 sets. The winner is the person who is the first to achieve 2 sets…the winner of the set has to win by more than one game…if a set is tied at 6 all…a tie break follows…

  14. Describe the nature of a quality performance in this activity In a badminton game there can be 2 players (single) or 4 players (doubles). A game lasts 3 sets. The winner is the person who is the first to achieve 2 sets and the winner of the set has to reach 21 points. If a set is tied at 20 all, the set continues until there are two clear points. It is therefore objectively decided. The event has no time limit and lasts until the scores are reached. It is an indoor event providing consistent conditions for the matches to be played under. The performance is directly competitive due to performers being influenced by the shots that their opponents play. There are rules that need to be followed and players are expected to play within a code of conduct where they respect their opponent and the officials. Spectators watch games being played and can support or intimidate players. As a consequence, players need to be in control of their emotions.

  18. Personal demands You need to have self confidence to compete against other players and believe that you can win. You need to have excellent concentration to pay attention to the shots of your opponents. You need good mental preparation to be able to visualise the performance ahead, remain calm and focus on your performance. Avoiding distractions caused by any other performer is important. Finally, self determination is required to put the required amount of effort into the performance.

  20. Markers information for Demands Demands: Technical, Physical, Mental and Special. Candidates may demonstrate acquired knowledge and understanding across all related demands or focus on one more comprehensively. Similarly, candidates may demonstrate acquired knowledge and understanding in respect of the unique game/event demands or emphasise the demands unique to the role/solo/duo performance relative to the activity selected. Special Performance Qualities: The responses will be wide ranging and relevant to the activity selected. Candidates may demonstrate acquired knowledge and understanding in respect of the specific role/solo related demands necessary for an effective performance. Reference to the application of a series of complex skills will impact on performance in competitive situations. For example: in relation to role demands,… as a central defender I am pushed to my limits in the later stages of the game… it is essential that I time my tackles or I will give away penalties… I need to control the ball artistically to wrong foot my opponent and get the ball out of danger areas… etc in relation to solo demands… as a gymnast I know that my tumbling routine has many complex skills that need to be performed in a linked sequence… I need tremendous focus as often I will be pushing myself to the limits… etc… most importantly I need to add flair and fluency in my routine to attract the best marks from the judges… etc. Candidates, who are elite performers may demonstrate acquired knowledge and understanding in respect of the application of strategy/composition at appropriate times to ensure an effective performance. Often this link is made in cognisance of knowledge of results and or knowledge of performance. For example: reflecting on previous performances we knew to double mark their key player as this would… etc… by applying a man to man strategy immediately would effectively tire them out and give us an advantage… etc… reflecting on my previous results I had to decide which solo piece to execute that would attract the best marks from the judges… etc.

  22. Higher 2007 and 2010 Choose an activity Describe the nature and demands of this activity. (6) This is a 6 mark question 15 minutes should be allocated to write out an answer. The marks could be allocated on a 2/4 split in this question (2 for description of specific nature and 4 for expansive description of demands showing knowledge of qualities and application to performance)

  23. A combination of both previous key feature elements is required in this answer. Remember the 2 / 4 mark split so give more consideration to the demands rather than the nature.
