  4. Accessing Grades and Feedback

  5. Welcome to the Kaplan University Writing Center LiveTutoring Q&A Center ReferenceLibrary PaperReview

  6. Overview It’s no secret that having strong writing skills will give you an edge in today’s competitive job market. It’s no secret that writing isn’t just for “writers.” You can learn to write well, and the quality of your writing can impact your career.

  7. Overview While you are taking steps toward your degree, why not take advantage of the Writing Center? LiveTutoring Q&A Center ReferenceLibrary PaperReview It’s free. It’s easy. It’s friendly and there when you need it.

  8. Live Tutoring Feeling unorganized? Commas giving you fits? Relax. Our live tutors are available 15 hours each week: Sunday, Monday and Tuesday 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. ET (Please note we are closed all other days, including official University holidays). Click on "Speak with a Writing Center Tutor“ link and "Join Live Tutorial“ will appear. This is where you can interact with a friendly, capable tutor. * Our tutors are 100% genuine Kaplan University professors. That means they are fully experienced, completely trained, and ready to help you with any area and any stage of writing.

  9. Q&A Center Can’t squeeze a tutor into your busy schedule? No problem. You can easily submit a question for a tutor. With our 24/7 “Q & A Center,” you can type out any writing question you have directly on the screen and leave it with us. This is especially helpful when you cannot make it during “live tutor” hours, or have a rather complicated question. For example, let’s say you have an unusual source you want to cite or reference in a paper, and none of your APA tip sheets or websites show a good example. Post your question in the “Q&A Center” and we will get back with you in approximately 24 hours.

  10. Reference Library It’s 3 in the morning. You need to know what? We probably have the answer. In the Writing Center’s Reference Library, we have a wide variety of tips on common writing issues under these categories:Writing Types and Tools Writing Process Research, Citation, and Plagiarism, Writing MechanicsThese student friendly, professor approved PDF documents can be saved to your computer and easily printed. The “Research, Citation, and Plagiarism” section is particularly helpful. If you are having trouble with APA (formatting, in-text citations, creating a reference page), this section can help, and “APA 101” is a great place to start.

  11. Paper Review Service Paper due next week? We can help. When you “Submit a Paper for Feedback,” one of our tutors will review it and give you some valuable suggestions to help you improve your writing. This is especially useful during the draft stage of the writing process. Our tutors will return your paper (with clear, useful suggestions) within 48-72 hours. Nice! How do you do it? Easy. Attach your paper to an email message from your Kaplan account and send it to: KUWC@kaplan.edu In KU Campus, click on the “Mail” link in the upper-right corner of the page, then click on “Compose” and “Add Attachment.” But don’t stop reading yet …

  12. Paper Review Service … it’s important to note: • This service does not guarantee higher grades; grades on projects are strictly the domain of your Kaplan University professor. Use the comments you receive from the Paper Review Service to create a stronger draft of your project. • Papers must be submitted as an attached Word .doc, .docx, or .rtf file. Failure to do this will delay timely feedback. • With your submission, you must provide: • your full name • your Kaplan email address • an alternative email address (for example, hotmail, Gmail, yahoo, etc.) • your course and section number (for example, CM220-01) • the name of your instructor • Please include only one project per email request. If you have more than one paper to be reviewed, please compose a separate email for each. • While all other resources offered by the Writing Center are unlimited, students are allowed to submit five projects per term for review by our tutors.

  13. How to Find Us Here’s how to find us: Log in to your Kaplan homepage, then click “My Studies,” then “Writing and Math Centers.” (Yes, Kaplan offers math tutoring, too!)

  14. How to Find Us Click around. Once you reach the Academic Success Center page, you’ll see our links in the navigation bar on the left.

  15. How to Find Us Once inside … ... you’ll notice a number of links designed especially for you. Don’t be shy—check them out.

  16. Thank you! Additional services? You bet. • We can help you understand and avoid plagiarism • We have ESL/ELL services if English is not your native language Stop by and see us.We look forward to working with you!

  17. Final Project Description Imagine that it is five years in the future. You have completed your educational program at Kaplan University and have been offered your dream job! The company or organization you will be working for wants to issue a biographical essay about you to announce that you are joining them and in what capacity. In order to do so, they need a minimum 500-word background essay from you. Your Final Project is not due until UNIT 9. We will be working on it in STEPS starting in Unit 3.

  18. What Your Essay Includes 1. One introductory paragraph that identifies who you are, where you live, the company or organization that has hired you and your new job title. 2. One body paragraph that gives appropriate personal details about you and your life—your age, family, hobbies, etc. (NOTE: this is a professional biography so you need to limit personal details to only what is appropriate in the professional environment). 3. One body paragraph that talks about your education. You should include high school or your GED, any previous college experience and your Kaplan program. 4. One paragraph that details professional experiences, including past job experiences, honors and awards and other related professional details. 5. One concluding paragraph that reinforces where you will be working, your job title and what you will be doing.

  19. Final Project Timeline We will talk in-depth about each of these components as we go through the course units. Remember, writing is a process and we will follow this process one step at a time.
