  3. Prior Knowledge • Prior knowledge is what a reader already knows about a subject. Good readers use their prior knowledge to help them understand information as they read.

  4. Cause and Effect • The effect is the action that happens. • The cause is why it happens. • Example: The girl got dirty because she fell in a mud puddle. • Cause: because she fell in a mud puddle • (Why it happened) • Effect: The girl got dirty • (What happened)

  5. Word Structure • Prefixes and suffixes have their own meanings. When you see an unfamiliar word, check to see if a prefix or suffix has been added to the base word. This will help you figure out a word’s meaning.
