  2. COURSE BUNDLE Opportunity for Grade 12s

  3. 4U English & 4U World History Bundle • Course Code – 4UENHI • Bundles together (2 credits – half day course) • CHY4U – Grade 12 World History since the Fifteenth Century • ENG4U– Grade 12 University English • Study the Europe and the world through history, novels, poetry, plays, music, photography, film, media, fashion, food, etc.

  4. Issues of Indigenous Peoples in a Global Context • Course Code – NDW4M1 • This course provides students with an overview of the issues and challenges that confront indigenous peoples world wide. Students will develop an understanding of the concerns and aspirations of the world’s indigenous population, plan and conduct research on global issues that have an impact on indigenous peoples.

  8. International Certificate Program (see ms. Basso) • Provides high school students the opportunity to become engaged global citizens. • Students earn a certificate by: • Studying an international language (not French) • Participating in intercultural communication workshops • Earning credits in internationally-focused classes • Gaining international experience locally and/or abroad • Universities have started to recognize this program as a beneficial addition to a students diploma. Eg. Huron @ Western offers $1000 entrance bursary

  9. Things to Consider When selecting courses • Advanced Placement (AP) • Choose courses ending with “E” • Eg. SBI4UE, CHY4UE, SCH4UE, and SPH4UE • These courses support/prepare students interested in writing AP exams • These courses will be offered in semester one only

Advanced Placement (AP) • Any student can write an AP exam, however, it is usually senior students who take advantage of the opportunity. • Exams are written in May and registration takes place in February and March. • Not all universities accept AP credits, please do your research • There is a cost of $130 to write the exam, plus an approximate $30 fee for the study guide (highly recommended)

  11. WHY Advanced Placement? 1. Confidence: Develop better study habits, and sharpen your problem-solving abilities. Give you the confidence to tackle the academic challenges that you can expect in University. 2. Credit: Entering University with AP credits gives you time to explore your field of interest, fast track, or pursue a double-major.

  17. Credit Count • By the end of grade 11, most of you will have earned 24 credits • ……and the luxury of having two spares if you desire to do so • If you choose to take two spares, they cannot be in the same semester

  18. Compulsory Credits • In Grade 12, the following course is compulsory…. • English • Ensure that by the end of grade 12, you will have earned a credit in each of Groups 1, 2, and 3.

  20. OSSLT • What if I did not successfully complete the OSSLT in grade 10? • You will be given a second opportunity to write the OSSLT this year • March 27, 2019

  21. OSSLT • What if I find out in the spring, after I have already selected my grade 12 courses, that I was not successful on the OSSLT? • Make an appointment with your guidance/learning services counsellor to add the Ontario Literacy Course (OLC4O) in grade 12

Specialist high skills major (SHSM) • Attention SHSM students: • Health and Wellness, Fitness Focus: the core course of PLF4M1 (Recreation and Healthy Active Living Leadership) must be a grade 12 course selection • Business: the core course of BOH4M1 (Business Leadership Management Fundamentals) must be a grade 12 course selection

  30. Specialist high skills major (SHSM) continued • Please ensure that your course selections include completion of your 4 major credits • Reminder: Courses used towards your CLA completion may NOT be used towards your 4 major credits

  31. Next Steps • The final deadline for registration in myBlueprint is February 22 • Start researching your course selections, talk to your parents, your teachers, your guidance/learning services counsellor

Next Steps • Summer School and myBlueprint: • If you plan on taking a summer school course DO NOT register for this course in myBlueprint. • In the “Student Comment” section of the registration/confirmation page in myBlueprint, let your counsellor know what course you will register for in summer school. • If you are not sure about summer school, register for the course at Oakridge for next year.
