Mean, Median and Mode

Mean, Median and Mode. Mean. Mean is a way of finding the typical value in the set of data finding the average To do this you calculate the sum (add them all together) and divide by how many numbers there are in the whole set. How to Find the Mean. Ex. 3, 4, 5, 2, 2, 3, 2

  1. Mean, Median and Mode

  2. Mean • Mean is a way of finding the typical value in the set of data • finding the average • To do this you calculate the sum (add them all together) and divide by how many numbers there are in the whole set

  3. How to Find the Mean • Ex. 3, 4, 5, 2, 2, 3, 2 • There are 7 numbers in the set • Sum of the numbers: 3+4+5+2+2+3+2 = 21 • 21 ÷ 7 = 3 • The mean is 3

  4. Median • Median is a way to determine a typical value in a set of data • To do this, put all of the numbers in order from smallest to greatest and find the middle number

  5. Finding the Median • Order the numbers from smallest to greatest • Ex. 1 4,5,2,3,4 → 2,3,4,4,5 • There are two numbers on each side so 4 is the median number • Ex. 2 3,2,5,6,9,11→ 2,3,5,6,9,11 • 5+6 = 11 • 11 ÷ 2 = 5.5 so the median number is 5.5 • For sets of data with an even number find the middle TWO numbers, add them together and divide by two

  6. Mode • Mode is a way to determine a typical value in a set of data • To do this, order the numbers and see which number is repeated the most. • If two numbers have the same amount they are both the mode • If no numbers repeat, no number is the mode

  7. Finding the Mode • Order the numbers • Ex. 1 4,5,2,3,4 → 2,3,4,4,5 • Four repeats so 4 is the mode • Ex. 2 12,1,2,1,4,7, 9,7 → 1,1,2,4,7,7,9,12 • One and seven repeat so they are both the mode • Ex. 3 3,2,5,6,9,11→ 2,3,5,6,9,11 • No number is repeated so there is no mode
