  1. Park Hill School District 2010-2011Academic Calendar

  2. Committee Structure The Board of Education appoints individuals to serve on the calendar committee. The committee is comprised of teachers, parents, classified staff and administrators. Members serve three year terms.

  3. Priorities for Calendar Decision Making The calendar should support instruction and assessment; The calendar should reflect the desires of parents and the community; and The calendar should represent the interests of Park Hill Employees

  4. Identified Goals by Committee Members Start after the second week in August Finish the semester by winter break Finish the school year before Memorial Day Begin the school year with a partial first week Schedule ½ work day at the end of each Qtr. Review the structure of Spring Break Consider days off in April

  5. Defining Parameters of the Calendar • New Teachers 194 days • Returning Teachers 189 days • Students 177 days Additional Teacher Days Include • Parent/Teacher Conf. 1.5 days • Teacher Prof. Dev. 4.5 days • Teacher Work Days 6.0 days

  6. Points considered Survey results supported ending school in May An earlier start was okay to support ending semester at winter break and school prior to June 1 Should the calendar reflect a full week spring break

  7. Process for Input Teachers, parents , support staff and administration are represented Prior to first meeting, representatives gather information A survey was launched in the fall to gather input from parents, staff and community patrons

Process for Input Continued Comments regarding the 08-09 calendar were reviewed as were results from the parent, community and staff survey After the development of the 1st draft calendar, each representative shares the highlights and gathers additional information The committee reconvened and individually shared strengths and weaknesses The committee considered all input and developed the final recommendation for the Board of Education

Modifications Made after Feedback • The committee discussed six points of the calendar. • Length of Thanksgiving Break • Length of Winter Break • PDC Day on President’s Day (staff work day) • Length of Spring Break • Start and End Dates for the Calendar • Balance of the semesters • The recommendations are as follows

  16. Committee considerations after first draft The starting day of Tuesday was left unchanged. The length of winter break was not lengthened. High school students will complete their final exams prior to winter break. President’s Day remains as a work day for teachers The April break was changed from April 29th to April 22nd Spring break was not lengthened to a full week
