  1. ONOMATOPOEIA And other poetic terms…

  2. What does it mean? • Onomatopoeia is a figure of speech in which the sound of a word imitates its own meaning

  3. Examples… • Buzz • Swoosh • Hiss • Vroom • Bam

  4. Now you think of some…

  5. When do you use it? • At the beginning of a fictional piece of work • To add effects to a story • To emphasize intensity

  6. Poe examples… • Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore, While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. "'Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door- Only this, and nothing more."

  7. More Poe • Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing, Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before; But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token, And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, "Lenore?" This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, "Lenore!"- Merely this, and nothing more.

  8. More Poe • Hear the sledges with the bellsSilver bells! What a world of merriment their melody foretells! How they tinkle, tinkle, tinkle, In the icy air of night! While the stars that oversprinkleAll the heavens, seem to twinkle With a crystalline delight;

  9. Now create your own!
