  1. The First Step of a Successful Hiring is to build a hiring benchmark for a specific position. There are three primary sources of data that can be used:

  2. Library Performance Models • Job Description Surveys (Job Analysis) • Concurrent Study of Your High Performers

  3. Some of the above methods can be used alone, while others are only supporting methods. The goal is to use the best information you have available to create the best model for job fit.

  4. Library Performance Models (Can be used alone or with other methods) Library performance models can be used alone or as a basis for developing a customized job fit model. The Performance Model Library was developed in two different ways:

  5. 1. Examining data sets of tens of thousands of top and bottom performers to understand what traits are common to people who are successful in different positions. 2. Examining data about job requirements and successful performance from the U.S. Department of Labor’s O*Net database.

  6. These are general occupational benchmarks and may not reflect the unique corporate culture of your organization. If you decide to use a Library Performance Model it is recommended that you verify the benchmark by conducting a Job Description Survey or Concurrent Study on the target position as soon as possible.

  7. The Library Performance Models include a description, which you can use to compare against the target position’s job description before selecting the model. The Library Performance Model descriptions are generally aligned with those found in the U.S. government’s online occupational directory.

  8. Job Description Survey (Can only be used to support other methods) The Job Description Survey (JDS) allows you to tailor a Library Performance Model to fit an organization’s unique requirements for a specific job. It includes questions about different job-related activities.

  9. The JDS is completed by one or more individuals who supervise the position and who are very familiar with what is required to perform successfully in that position. Once the surveys are completed, the data from the JDS is combined with input from other sources, like a Library Performance Model or top-performer data, to build the Performance Model.

  10. Concurrent Study (Can be used alone or with other methods) The Concurrent Study approach allows you to use assessment results from your organization’s top performers in the position to build a Performance Model.

  11. A concurrent study becomes more reliable the more employees you can involve in the study. Once the participants in your study have completed the assessment, you identify which of the individuals are the top performers. The system will then use this data to build a Performance Model.

  12. Next Steps Completing a Job Description Survey for your open position will create a customized Hiring Benchmark Report. This report offers a detailed profile of the work-related abilities, interests, motivations and personality traits of top performers in the position.

  13. The Hiring Benchmark Report provides data about the requirements of the job and it can also be used to supplement, organize and analyze the information provided in résumés, background checks and the interview. You will receive your Hiring Benchmark Report via email. Complete the First Step of a Successful Hiring today.
