How we started - 2009 • Poor numbers of employees under age 25 • No existing apprenticeship education programme • Struggle to recruit inexperience young people • Reputation of difficult to get in to • Young people bring a vibrancy and challenge to the work environment and don’t feel afraid to ask the innocent questions as to why things are being done the way they are. • Started small, following best practice from colleagues in other Trusts • Played it safe – minimal risk • Lots of learning!

How we developed • Merged Trusts through TCS 2011/12 • Dedicated Widening Participation Team supporting programme • Developed apprenticeship programme to fit our needs • Part of organisational development plans • Partnership approach to recruitment, education content and progression • Celebrated success • Continued to learn! • Young people bring a vibrancy and challenge to the work environment and don’t feel afraid to ask the innocent questions as to why things are being done the way they are.

Current Position • Expansion into many clinical areas and developing innovative roles to benefit our patients and service users – removing myths and barriers! • Fully embedded within the organisation. • Manager engagement with recruitment process. • Career pathway development linking in to progression programmes. • Further development of partnership working. • Formalising ‘Work Buddies’ to provide in-house mentoring/supervision • Continue to learn! • Young people bring a vibrancy and challenge to the work environment and don’t feel afraid to ask the innocent questions as to why things are being done the way they are.

Vision • Apprentices to be a standard route into our workforce with an annual programme of recruitment. • Education programme to support career progression • Ongoing development of partnership working – especially in the schools and education system. • Apprenticeship a real choice of career for young people. • Continue to learn! • Young people bring a vibrancy and challenge to the work environment and don’t feel afraid to ask the innocent questions as to why things are being done the way they are.

Results - 2013 • 43 appointed 2012/13 • 4 Did Not Start • 6 Left – own choice • 4 left – disciplinary issues • 29 Completed • 26 remain employed in NHS • 2 full time education • 1 employed in private sector • Young people bring a vibrancy and challenge to the work environment and don’t feel afraid to ask the innocent questions as to why things are being done the way they are.

What the manager’s say • Young people bring a vibrancy and challenge to the work environment and don’t feel afraid to ask the innocent questions as to why things are being done the way they are. • Apprentices often excel with their IT skills and often love databases and spread sheets, being able to teach us older locality managers a thing or two!! Full of ideas and really energise the team • It has been a great opportunity to help a young person realise their potential and see a side to the NHS they have never been aware of before. • I feel it makes you look at your own practices and procedures when you are training an apprentice, which can only improve the way in which we work.

What the apprentices’s say • I was so inspired in my admin role that I have chosen to continue with higher education and plan to become a qualified OT. • I have truly valued the opportunity to learn and grow within a role I didn’t really understand at first. I look forward to continuing my career. • I have realised that nursing is what I want to do and my apprenticeship has helped me realise my dreams of working with patients with dementia, making a difference to their care. • I came into my apprenticeship not really knowing what I wanted to do with my life. • I am now a HR professional qualifying through CIPD.
