Five common beliefs about second language learning: True or false? • Children learn second languages quickly and easily . • The younger the child, the more skilled in acquiring a second language. • The more time students spend in a second language context, the quicker they learn the language. • Children have acquired a second language once they can speak it. • All children learn a second language in the same way.

  4. “Save the Last Word for Me” Strategy • Read the text and underline four or five sentences that resonate with you. • Sit in groups of 3 or 4 • The first participant will read aloud one of the sentences he or she has underlined, but say nothing about it. • Each of the other participants, in turn, responds to this sentence with his or own personal reflections. • After all others have responded, the original participant explains why he or she chose this sentence . • Another participant then reads one of his or her sentences aloud and the cycle continues until all have had the opportunity to discuss a key sentence. Why is this a good reading strategy for second language learners and non-second language learners alike?
