2. Schooling in Victorian Era In 1837, when Queen Victoria was in throne, school was still only for the privileged. The boys usually went to public school and girls were usually educated at home.

3. Laws About School In the year 1870 there was a law made that states that children between the age 5 and 10 attend weekday school. But in 1893 the leaving age was changed to 11.

4. Headmasters & Headmistresses Teachers were very strict and scary in that time. Most of the headmasters or headmistresses were not married and if you married you stopped teaching. The majority of teachers were women because pay was poor. The teachers did not have a college education it was more of “on-the-job-training.”

5. Punishments Some punishments were detention and the awful dunce cap. You would be forced to wear the dunce cap if you were slow on the lessons, or dumb. Also they got hit with a ruler on the knuckles or whipped.

6. Presence in School The schools were very grim and nasty places. There were windows but they were very high up so children couldn’t see outside. The walls were bare and the girls and boys were usually separated. Even in smaller schools the boys and girls were still separate.

7. Sports -Bicycling -Croquet -lawn tennis -roller skating -horseback riding -water activities

8. The ultimate sport…fanning. Fanning. Women used this to get away with saying things to other people, maybe their lovers, without someone else knowing. It was basically like Morse code. The women would move the fan in a certain motion or number of times.
