  1. Forces and Motion Cornell Notes • EQ: How does force influence motion?

  2. What is force? • Force is a push or pull needed to start an object moving. • The force has to be stronger than the object • Think about a door. The door will stay in the same place unless something like your hand or the wind pushes or pulls it closed.

  3. Question:Is it possible for an ant to move a brick? • Yes • No

  4. What is Friction? A force that resists movement. For example, ice is slippery, however, dirt is not very slippery and has lots of friction.

  5. What is Motion? Motion occurs when an object moves from one place to another. For motion to occur there has to be a force from on place to another. • You can describe motion with 3 types of words: • Type of motion • Speed • Direction

  6. Newton’s Laws of Motion How do laws of motion explain force?

  7. Who was Newton? • Sir Isaac Newton (1642 -1726) was an English scientist who is best known for the discovering gravity and studying motion and force. • We measure Force in Newtons (N)

  8. What are Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion? • 1. Law of Inertia • 2. F=ma • 3. Action-Reaction

  9. 1st Law of Motion (Law of Inertia) An object that is not in motion will remain stopped unless pushed or pulled by a force. An object in motion will keep moving unless a force pulls or pushes it. .

  11. What is this unbalanced force that acts on an object in motion? Friction! • There are four main types of friction: • Sliding friction: two objects sliding on one another • Rolling friction: an object rolling over a surface • Fluid friction (air or liquid): air or water resistance • Static friction: initial friction when moving an object

  17. Force = mass x acceleration • Force is measured in Newtons (N) • Mass is measured in Kilograms (Kg) • Acceleration is measured in meters per seconds squared m/s/s
