As more and more districts are transitioning to the G Suite for Education, there is always a discussion of how to successfully implement the move to the platform and 1:1 devices.  Strategic planning, persistence, consistency, and most importantly, creativity, are all important components.  This session will discuss and share the many ideas and resources that Newington, CT implemented in their successful transition to G Suite for Education and 1:1 devices.

Newington Public Schools • Suburban District south of Hartford, CT with over 30,000 residents • Approximately 4,000 students (K-12) and 400 instructional staff • 7 Schools (4 Elementary Schools, 2 Middle Schools, High School) • Academies & Programs • STEM Exploratory Program (MS) • Academy of Biomedical Sciences (MS) • Academy of Aerospace & Engineering (MS) • IT & Digital Innovation Academy (HS) • Culinary & Hospitality Academy (HS) • Finance & Business Academy (HS)

  5. The Why The focus of the 1:1 Device Program in Newington Public Schools (NPS) is to empower its community of students to become fully active participants in our global technology driven society. The 1:1 Device Program facilitates:  access to digital educational resources; availability beyond the school day; individualized learning; creativity and innovation; personal and social responsibility; critical thinking and problem solving; communication and collaboration; technology literacy skills; and college and career readiness.

  6. 5 Year Strategic Initiative • Year 1:   BYOD at HS and Pilot iPad Program at Elementary level • Year 2:   iPad Pilot expands to all grade levels • Year 3:   iPad integration continues along with Laptop carts at all levels • Year 4:   Chromebook Pilot and 1:1 Laptops in Grades 3 & 6 and Academies • Chromebook End of Life& Comparison Chart • Year 5:   iPad Carts for all classrooms Grades K-2 • Chromebooks for all students Grades 3-8 • Phase 2:  Chromebooks for 9-12

  7. What Was More Important? Infrastructure Evolution over 9 years: • Hotspots (laptop carts, critical spaces) • BYOD (HS and MS) • Coverage (rest of district) • Capacity • Redesign for the future (2 yrs ago) • Upgrade hardware (2015) • Development of a comprehensive IT Team
